What's different about electrical work in Toowoomba
You're on Ergon, not Energex
Energex says homes west of Gatton are on the Ergon Energy network, so Toowoomba reports outages to Ergon on 13 22 96 and fallen lines or shocks on 13 16 70, any hour. Toowoomba Regional Council's online Disaster Dashboard also shows power outages, alongside weather warnings and road conditions.
Cold nights on a high range
The city sits on the crest of the Great Dividing Range, around 700 metres up. Light frost hits the centre several nights each winter, more often in the western suburbs, and snow has been reported on higher ground. Heaters running for hours on older circuits are a classic winter cause of tripping and warm power points.
Flash floods, hail and fog
On 10 January 2011, after days of rain, an intense storm overwhelmed East Creek and West Creek through the CBD, with 149.6 mm in one day, and 2 people died. Hail and fog are more frequent here than in many Queensland towns. Council now runs a flood early warning system for Toowoomba and Oakey creeks.
Queenslanders and heritage streets
Toowoomba is known for Victorian-era buildings and traditional Queenslanders, like the turn-of-the-century timber homes in the Caledonian Estate east of the CBD. Over fifty sites are on the Queensland Heritage Register, and council keeps its own register of heritage and neighbourhood character places. Check whether an overlay applies before work that changes the outside of the house.
Mostly houses, plenty of renters
At the 2021 Census, 82.7% of occupied homes in the Toowoomba Regional council area were separate houses, only 3.7% were flats or apartments, and 31.8% were rented.
The jobs that come up most in Toowoomba
Older wiring and switchboards in character homes. A Queenslander that's been extended and modernised over a century can carry several generations of wiring at once. If heaters or a new appliance keep tripping the power, the board and circuits are where an electrician starts. Switchboard upgrades explains the usual fix.
Safety switches for sales and rentals. In Queensland, a buyer has 90 days after taking possession to have an approved safety switch fitted for the power points, and a landlord has 90 days from the start of a tenancy. An approved switch is an RCD that trips at no more than 30 milliamps.
Smoke alarms before 1 January 2027. Every Queensland home, owner-occupied ones included, needs interconnected photoelectric alarms by then. Hardwired alarms must be replaced with hardwired ones by an electrician.
Solar and batteries. On Ergon's basic connection, household inverters are capped at 10 kVA per phase and export at 5 kW per phase. Homes on single wire earth return (SWER) lines, common in rural areas, have a lower basic export limit of 2 kW in total. Ergon also offers dynamic connections, which can allow up to 10 kW per phase when the network has room and drop to 1.5 kW when it doesn't.
After a storm or flood
If water has been through the house, the shed or the switchboard, leave the power off until a licensed electrician has tested the wiring. The 2011 flood showed how fast it happens here: more than 160 mm fell in 36 hours and ran straight into gullies and streets. For storm damage to the building, the SES is on 132 500. Fallen lines are Ergon's: assume they're live and keep well clear.
Queensland's rules apply on the Range too
Anyone doing electrical work needs an electrical work licence that covers it, and the business needs an electrical contractor licence. Contractors must show their licence number in their ads. After the work is connected you get a certificate of testing and compliance, and the contractor keeps a copy for at least 5 years. How to check an electrician's licence covers the rest.
If we lived in Toowoomba
We'd save both Ergon numbers and bookmark council's Disaster Dashboard before the summer storms. Before winter, we'd notice which circuits the heaters run on, and if the power trips or a power point feels warm when they're on, we'd have an electrician look at the board rather than shuffling heaters between rooms. In an older Queenslander, we'd ask for the wiring to be checked whenever anything new is added.

Questions
Straight answers.
Who do I call when the power goes out in Toowoomba?
Ergon Energy, on 13 22 96, if the street is out too. Fallen lines and shocks go to Ergon on 13 16 70. If only your home is dark and a safety switch has tripped, reset it once with appliances unplugged; if it won't hold, call an electrician.
Why does my power trip in winter?
Usually too much load on one circuit, with heaters, electric blankets and the kettle all running together, or an ageing fault that shows up under that load. Spreading heaters helps briefly, but an electrician can tell you whether the circuit or the switchboard needs work.
Do I need council approval for electrical work on a heritage home?
The electrical work itself is about licensing and safety, but changes to the outside of a heritage or character home can trigger council rules. Toowoomba Regional Council lets owners check whether their home sits under a heritage or neighbourhood character overlay before planning alterations.
I'm on a rural block outside town. Does my solar export limit differ?
It can. On Ergon's network, homes on SWER lines have a basic export limit of 2 kW in total, lower than the 5 kW per phase most homes get. Your electrician or solar installer can confirm which applies to your connection.
