Electricians in Western AustraliaEC for the business, EW for the electrician.

In Western Australia, electrical work is done by a licensed electrical contractor, whose licence number starts with EC, using licensed electricians, whose numbers start with EW. You can look up both on the WA Online Licence Search. For most installing work, you should get an Electrical Safety Certificate within 28 days.

Who licenses electricians in WA?

Building and Energy, part of the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety, regulates electrical safety, and the Electrical Licensing Board issues the licences. All electrical work must be done by someone holding the relevant licence, and a contracting business must employ licensed electricians.

Running or advertising an electrical contracting business without a contractor's licence is an offence. Unless another penalty is set, offences under the licensing regulations carry fines of up to $50,000 for an individual and $250,000 for a company.

What a WA electrician's advertising has to show

  • The contractor's licence number, with its EC prefix.
  • On every ad: web pages, business cards, vehicle signs, letterheads and directory listings.
  • Easy to see: Building and Energy's guideline is at least half the size of the ad's largest lettering.
  • With the main body of the ad, not tucked away at the bottom.

Checking a licence in WA

  1. Note both numbers

Ask for the contractor's EC number and the EW number of the electrician who'll actually do the work.

  2. Search the Online Licence Search

Building and Energy's 'Find a licensed electrician' link opens the WA Online Licence Search.

  3. Match the names

The business should match the EC licence and the person on site the EW licence. Building and Energy says both should hold the right licence for the job.

Your Electrical Safety Certificate

For installing work, apart from maintenance and like-for-like replacement, the contractor must give you a copy within 28 days of finishing, and only a licensed electrical contractor can issue one. If it doesn't turn up, ask the contractor, and if it still doesn't come, tell your network operator, which in most areas is Western Power or Horizon Power. The form asks whether every power point and lighting circuit is protected by at least two RCDs (safety switches).

Selling or renting: RCDs and smoke alarms

Before title transfers on a sale, RCDs must protect every circuit supplying power points and lights, with two as the minimum. Landlords need them in the switchboard too, and short-stay rentals need them before guests arrive. Building and Energy recommends pressing the test button every three months.

Smoke alarms must comply before a home changes hands or is rented out: working, permanently connected to mains power, and no more than 10 years old. Battery-only alarms are allowed only where mains wiring can't be run, such as under a concrete ceiling, and need a non-removable 10-year battery. Multiple alarms must be interconnected, unless the home's building permit application predates 1 May 2015. Only a licensed electrical contractor can connect mains alarms. See smoke alarm laws in WA.

Felt a tingle from a tap? Report it

On Western Power's network, every electric shock must be reported, even a slight tingle from a tap or appliance. Treat a fallen line or pole as live and keep at least 8 metres away. Call 000 first if anyone's life is at risk.

Western Power or Horizon Power

Western Power: 13 13 51

The main South West grid, taking in Perth and reaching north to Kalbarri, east to Kalgoorlie and south to Albany. One number for outages, fallen lines and other network emergencies.

Horizon Power: 13 23 51

Regional towns and remote communities outside the main grid, including the Pilbara. Staffed 24 hours for faults and outages.

What we'd do in WA

Write down the EC and EW numbers and look both up before the first visit. If you're selling, get the RCDs and smoke alarms sorted well before settlement, since both must comply before title transfers, and keep the Electrical Safety Certificate with your sale papers.
