Electricians on the Gold CoastOne licence-checked sparky who does your kind of job.
Tell us the job and your Gold Coast suburb, and we'll match it with one licence-checked local electrician who does that work week in, week out. If the power's out across the street or a line is down, that's Energex, not an electrician: 13 62 62 for outages, 13 19 62 for fallen lines.
- Sparky Next Door certified electricians only
- One specialist, not five phone calls
- Only the electrician who takes your job gets your number
A line down in your street?
Treat it as live, even if it's lying still. Keep everyone, kids and dogs included, well clear, and ring Energex on 13 19 62, any hour. If someone's life is at risk, call 000 first. An electrician can't touch the network's lines, so don't wait for one.
What's different about electrical work on the Gold Coast
Energex runs the poles and wires, not your retailer
Energex owns the poles and wires across South East Queensland. Its Outage Finder maps unplanned outages and planned work, and planned shutdowns come with at least four business days' notice. Meters are a separate matter: they're arranged through your electricity retailer, not Energex.
Storm season does the damage here
After the Christmas evening storms of 2023, 60 Gold Coast localities were activated for disaster assistance, Helensvale, Oxenford, Coomera, Nerang and Mudgeeraba among them. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred followed in March 2025, with gusts over 100 km/h. The 31 October 2020 hailstorm cut power to 95,000 homes across South East Queensland.
Three generations of houses
Southport's oldest streets have Queenslanders up on stumps from around 1900 and fibro bungalows from the 1950s and 60s. Burleigh's strip toward the highway is mostly two and three storey flats from the 1960s and 70s. Robina was laid out as a master-planned community from 1980, and Pimpama's population jumped from 9,396 to 24,601 between the 2016 and 2021 Census counts.
Lots of units, lots of renters
At the 2021 Census, 21.7% of occupied Gold Coast homes were flats or apartments and 33.8% were rented. That makes body corporate approvals and landlord rules a bigger part of the job here than in most cities.
Water at the back fence
More than 80,000 people live on over 890 km of constructed residential waterfront, and most canal-front homes have a pontoon. Power and lights running down to the water are outdoor circuits in the wettest spot on the block.
The border runs through Coolangatta
Tweed Heads is the twin town across the line in New South Wales, so NSW rules apply there: a CCEW (Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work) after the job, and NSW's Accredited Service Provider scheme for work on the service line.
The jobs that come up most here, and why
Smoke alarms, before 1 January 2027. Every Queensland home, townhouse and unit needs interconnected photoelectric alarms by then, owner-occupied homes included. If your current alarms are hardwired, the new ones must be hardwired too, and that's an electrician's job. Smoke alarms on the Gold Coast has the detail.
Safety switches when a home sells or a lease starts. A buyer has 90 days after taking possession to have an approved safety switch fitted for the power points, and a landlord has 90 days from the start of a tenancy. With a third of homes rented, this comes up constantly.
Storm repairs. Water in outdoor fittings, power points that died after a surge, and anything that went under when a canal or creek came up. In the January 1974 flood, about 2,000 people were evacuated from homes along the Nerang River and the canals.
Solar, batteries and EV chargers on newer homes. Energex's basic connection limits household inverters to 10 kVA per phase and export to 5 kW per phase, and any new or replacement system of 10 kVA or more needs a generation signalling device. EV charger installation on the Gold Coast covers the unit and estate side.
The Queensland rules every Gold Coast job falls under
In Queensland, nobody may do or supervise electrical work without an electrical work licence that covers it, and any business that does or advertises electrical work needs an electrical contractor licence. Contractors must put their licence number in their ads, along with their licensed name and a statement that they're licensed under the Electrical Safety Act. If an ad or quote doesn't show a number, ask for it.
After the work is connected, the contractor gives you a certificate of testing and compliance, showing what was tested, when, and their licence number. They have to keep a copy for at least 5 years, but keep yours somewhere you'll find it when you sell. How to check an electrician's licence walks through the checks.
Where we'd start on the Gold Coast
Before the next storm season, we'd save both Energex numbers in every phone in the house, press the test button on each safety switch, and look at the dates on the smoke alarms. If the alarms are hardwired, older than 10 years or not linked to each other, we'd book that work now rather than in the December rush. Then, for anything that's tripping, scorched or been wet, we'd get one electrician who does that job regularly to find the cause, not just reset it.

Questions
Straight answers.
The power's out at my place on the Gold Coast. Who do I call?
Look at the neighbours first. If the street is dark, it's Energex: check the Outage Finder or ring 13 62 62. If only your home is out and a safety switch has tripped, reset it once with things unplugged. If it won't stay on, you need an electrician.
Do units need interconnected smoke alarms too?
Yes. Queensland's 1 January 2027 deadline covers houses, townhouses and units, whether they're rented or lived in by the owner. Alarms go in every bedroom, in hallways joining bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey.
I'm buying a house on the Gold Coast. What do I need to know about safety switches?
The seller has to tell you in writing, on or before the day you take possession, whether an approved safety switch protects the power points. No safety switch? Then it's on you, as the new owner, to get one fitted within 90 days of moving in.
Do the same rules apply in Tweed Heads?
No. Tweed Heads is in New South Wales, so the job falls under NSW rules, including a CCEW lodged after the work. Queensland's rules stop at the border, even though the shops and beaches don't.
