Electricians in New South WalesCheck the licence first. Get the CCEW after.
Any electrical wiring work in New South Wales needs a licence, whatever the size of the job. Look the electrician up on Service NSW before they start, and expect a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) when they finish. We match homeowners anywhere in the state with local specialists.
Who licenses electricians in NSW?
Building Commission NSW manages electrical licensing, and applications start through Service NSW. A business that contracts for wiring work needs a contractor licence, and the people doing or supervising it need a qualified supervisor certificate or a provisional tradesperson certificate.
Unlicensed wiring work breaches the Home Building Act 1989, with fines of $22,000 for an individual and $110,000 for a company. Every ad, in print or online, must show the licensee's name and licence number, so a van or website without one is worth a question.
How do I check an electrician's licence in NSW?
Get the number
It should be on their ads, website or quote, because NSW advertising rules require it.
Search Service NSW or Verify NSW
Service NSW's licence check takes a name, licence number, category, ABN or ACN, or a suburb or postcode. Verify NSW is the government's official record. Make sure the licence is current and covers electrical wiring.
Can't find it? Ring Fair Trading
Service NSW says to contact NSW Fair Trading if the online check doesn't work or the licence won't show up. Hold off on any work until it's sorted.
The CCEW: your record that the work complies
Whoever tests the work lodges the CCEW within 7 days of finishing, even for a like-for-like swap. Since 1 July 2026 it goes through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal, so ask the electrician to enter your email and you'll get a copy when it's lodged. Renting? Pass your copy to the owner or agent.
Level 2 work only exists in NSW
Service lines, new or altered connections and the service protection device on your main switchboard are the job of a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider, whose workers also need authorisation from your local network. You can search providers on the NSW ASP Scheme portal, and Level 2 electricians covers when you need one.
Smoke alarms and safety switches in NSW
Every NSW home needs working smoke alarms meeting AS 3786 on each level. Landlords must check them and replace removable batteries every year, replace alarms within 10 years of manufacture, and fix a faulty one within two business days, using a licensed electrician for hardwired alarms. Smoke alarm laws in NSW has the detail.
NSW Fair Trading strongly recommends that homes built before 2000 have an electrician check for safety switches, and suggests one on every circuit, tested at least every six months. In a rental, a faulty one counts as an urgent repair.
Lines down or the whole street dark? Call your network
All three NSW networks say to stay at least 8 metres from fallen power lines. Assume they're live, call 000 first if anyone's life is in danger, then ring the network for your area.

Where we'd start in NSW
Look the licence up before anyone books a time, and give the electrician your email so the CCEW lands in your inbox. If the job might touch the meter or the street connection, ask in the first call whether a Level 2 provider is needed. Planning a switchboard upgrade and an EV charger? Both are on the approved list for NSW Home Energy Saver loans, which are zero-interest loans of up to $15,000.
Want a specialist to sort it?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match the licence-checked local electrician who does this kind of work, and they call you. No ring-around, and your number goes to them alone.
