Wodonga, Victoria

Electricians in WodongaOne urban area, two states, two sets of rules.

Wodonga and Albury share an urban area but not a rulebook. On the Wodonga side, Victoria's rules apply: you hire a Registered Electrical Contractor, you get a Certificate of Electrical Safety and AusNet handles faults. Cross the Murray and it's NSW licences, NSW's certificate and Essential Energy. We'll match your Wodonga job with one licence-checked local electrician who does it regularly, where we have one.

Which side is your job on?

The property's address decides, not where the electrician's business is based. In Victoria, a business can't offer or carry out electrical contracting unless it's registered with Energy Safe Victoria, so if a sparky is coming over the bridge for a Wodonga job, ask for their registration number and expect a Victorian certificate.

It works the other way too. A Wodonga electrician doing a job in Albury is working under NSW rules, and the paperwork you get should be a CCEW.

Wodonga's growth, rentals and network

AusNet Services: 13 17 99

Wodonga is on AusNet's network. Ring 13 17 99 for outages and fallen lines, and keep more than 8 to 10 metres from any line that's down. The Wodonga zone substation has a Rapid Earth Fault Current Limiter (REFCL), a bushfire safety device that limits the energy of a powerline fault so it can't start a fire.

Leneva-Baranduda

Wodonga Council says the Leneva-Baranduda precinct will hold up to 6037 new dwellings for about 15,395 residents, built out over 20 to 30 years. AusNet announced in 2025 that it would augment the transformers at the Wodonga Terminal Station to allow more connections.

A city that rents

At the 2021 Census, 35.0% of Wodonga's homes were rented. Since 13 October 2026, every Victorian rental needs an electrical safety check every 2 years, done to section 4 of AS/NZS 3019.

Summer load

Wodonga's record high is 45.4 C. Air conditioning is a big load for an older switchboard, so get the circuits checked before adding a second or third unit.

Building in Leneva or Baranduda?

Think about what you'll want in five years: a circuit for an EV charger, outdoor power, data cabling. Running cable before the plaster goes on is far easier than after.

For solar, AusNet's network has needed a solar emergency backstop since 1 October 2024, which means an inverter connected to the internet. Switchboards for solar and EV chargers covers the board side.

Our take for Wodonga

Check which state the job is in before you check the licence. For a Wodonga property, we'd search the contractor and the electrician on Energy Safe Victoria's registers and make sure a Certificate of Electrical Safety comes at the end. If you're a landlord, we'd book the 2-yearly check now rather than waiting for a new tenant to force it.
