Electricians in BairnsdaleReady for the days the power stays off.

In East Gippsland, the electrical question isn't only who fixes a fault. It's how you get through when the power is off for days. In the 2019 to 2020 Black Summer fires, many communities around Bairnsdale were cut off from electricity for weeks. Generators, life support plans and storm recovery are local jobs here, alongside the usual switchboards and rental checks. We'll match yours with one licence-checked local electrician who does that work, if we have one.

When the power's off for weeks

By the end of December 2019, more than 230,000 hectares had burnt in East Gippsland. A community relief centre ran in Bairnsdale, and many East Gippsland communities were without electricity for weeks.

That's why so many local homes and farms keep a generator. Used properly, it's a lifeline. Connected the wrong way, it can feed power back into the network and put line crews at risk, and it can damage your own wiring.

Generators: your part, and the electrician's

You can

  • Run a portable generator outside, well away from doors and windows.
  • Plug appliances straight into the generator with leads rated for the load.
  • Keep the fridge and essentials on it, and leave everything else off.
  • Switch the generator off before refuelling.

Leave to a licensed electrician

  • Fitting a generator inlet and changeover switch, so the house can run from a generator without feeding the network.
  • Connecting anything to the switchboard.
  • Checking wiring after fire, smoke or flood damage before the power goes back on.

Bairnsdale's network, fire and floods

AusNet Services: 13 17 99

Bairnsdale is on AusNet's network. Ring 13 17 99 for faults and fallen lines, and check its Outage Tracker for planned and unplanned outages. Energy Safe Victoria says to keep more than 8 to 10 metres from a fallen line.

Bushfire safety on the network

The Bairnsdale zone substation has a Rapid Earth Fault Current Limiter (REFCL), a device that limits the energy of a powerline fault so it can't ignite a fire. AusNet announced further upgrades to the substation in 2025.

The Mitchell River

Floods on the Mitchell have been frequent, with particularly high levels in the 1870s and 1890s and further major floods in the 1930s, 1949 and 1952. Anything electrical that's been under water stays off until an electrician has checked it.

Life support

If someone at home relies on life support equipment, AusNet has a separate priority line: 1800 818 832. Talk to your doctor and an electrician about a backup plan before fire season.

Homes in and around Bairnsdale

Bairnsdale takes in East Bairnsdale, Lucknow and Wy Yung. At the 2021 Census, 39.0% of homes were owned outright and 12.9% were semi-detached houses, terraces or townhouses. Older, paid-off houses are where original switchboards tend to last longest.

29.1% of homes were rented. Since 13 October 2026, the 2-yearly electrical safety check covers every Victorian rental, not just newer leases. Rental safety checks explains what's involved.

What we'd sort before fire season

If we relied on a generator, we'd have an electrician fit a proper inlet and changeover switch rather than running leads through a window. We'd save AusNet's 13 17 99, and the life support line if it applies, in every phone in the house. And if the switchboard still had old fuses, we'd upgrade it well before summer rather than in the middle of it.

Questions

Straight answers.

Can I plug my generator into a power point?

No. Feeding power back through a power point can put line crews and your own wiring at risk. Plug appliances straight into the generator, or have an electrician fit a proper inlet and changeover switch.

Who do I call for an outage in Bairnsdale?

AusNet Services on 13 17 99, or its Outage Tracker. If only your house is out, check the switchboard for a tripped safety switch. Fire, smoke or injury: call 000.

What does the REFCL at the substation mean for my house?

It's part of AusNet's bushfire safety equipment on the network side, built to stop a powerline fault from starting a fire. Victoria required them in high bushfire risk areas after the 2009 Bushfires Royal Commission.
