Electricians in BallaratGetting an old house ready for an electric winter.
Ballarat's big electrical story right now is winter. More households are heating with electricity, and Powercor says use in the city has risen sharply because of it. That strains old switchboards and some streets' supply on frosty nights. If we have a licence-checked local electrician who does this kind of upgrade in your area, we'll pass your job to them.

Going electric for winter
Ballarat can drop below freezing anywhere from May to September. Swapping a gas heater for reverse cycle split systems, or a gas cooktop for induction, adds big loads to a house that was never wired for them.
Before you buy, have an electrician check three things: whether the switchboard has room and safety switches, whether the circuits can carry the new load, and whether the supply into the house can. Switchboard upgrades and gas to induction go into the detail.
Lights dimming on cold evenings?
If lights dim or heaters struggle at peak times and the neighbours notice it too, tell Powercor on 13 24 12. In August 2026 it upgraded part of the low voltage network serving about 40 Ballarat properties after customers reported voltage dropping too low at peak demand.
If it's only your house, or it happens whenever one appliance kicks in, the cause is more likely your wiring or board, and that's an electrician's job. Flickering lights helps you tell which.
Ballarat's housing, heritage and weather
The oldest streets
Soldiers Hill and Ballarat Central have Victorian, Federation and Interwar houses in weatherboard, brick and bluestone. Solid masonry walls make new cable runs slower, so agree the route in the quote.
Post-war estates
The Waller Estate in Newington went up mostly between 1945 and 1961, and Wendouree West was a Housing Commission estate built after the war. Victoria's Asbestos Hub says a home built or renovated before 1990 likely contains asbestos, so leave an original switchboard backing alone and tell the electrician about it.
Heritage overlays and solar
Much of Ballarat sits under heritage overlays. The City of Ballarat plans to publish guidelines for solar on heritage buildings and, until then, asks Heritage Overlay owners to contact its planning team before going ahead.
Wind, storms and Powercor
Ballarat's mean daily wind run is 470 km, nearly double Melbourne's. After the February 2025 lightning storms, 203 Ballarat customers were still off supply the next morning. Fallen lines are Powercor's to fix: keep more than 8 to 10 metres away and ring 13 24 12.
Newer estates, different questions
Ballarat's infill and estates built mostly after 1990 already have modern boards. There, the questions are about adding: an EV charger, a battery, or a third heat pump. Powercor says new solar systems on its network since October 2024 need an approved inverter that supports CSIP-AUS, so check that before you sign. Switchboards for solar and EV chargers covers the board side.
Our take for Ballarat
Plan the switch to electric heating in autumn, not in July. We'd have an electrician look at the board and the supply first, fix what's needed, then buy the heaters. If you're in a Heritage Overlay and want solar to help with the running costs, we'd ring the council's planning team before signing anything.

Questions
Straight answers.
Can my old Ballarat switchboard handle split systems?
Sometimes. A fuse board with no safety switches and no spare space usually can't take several new circuits. An electrician can tell you after a short look, and the answer decides if you're buying heaters or a board first.
Do I need a permit for solar on a heritage house in Ballarat?
Ask the City of Ballarat's planning team. It's preparing guidelines for solar on heritage buildings and wants Heritage Overlay owners to check with it before going ahead.
Who fixes low voltage in my street?
Powercor, if the problem is in the network, so report it on 13 24 12. An electrician can measure the voltage at your switchboard to show whether the trouble is inside the house or out on the street.
