Batemans Bay, New South Wales
Electricians in Batemans BayFor homes that aren't always lived in.
When bushfire reached Batemans Bay on New Year's Eve 2019, power and communications went down together. And on census night 2021, more than a quarter of private dwellings in Eurobodalla were unoccupied. Both shape what's worth doing here: preparing for outages, and making sure a house that sits empty is still safe. Tell us your job and we'll match it with one licence-checked electrician nearby who does that work, where we have one.

Batemans Bay facts
Essential Energy's network
Eurobodalla Shire Council's disaster dashboard lists Essential Energy, 13 20 80, for power outages. That's also the number for a fallen line or a tree on the wires.
New Year's Eve 2019
When the fire reached town, power and communications went down, homes were lost at Runnyford and spot fires broke out behind Catalina.
Many homes sit empty
On census night 2021, 6,226 private dwellings in Eurobodalla, 27.3%, were unoccupied. The census doesn't say why.
Mostly owner-occupied houses
Of occupied homes, 83.6% were separate houses, 49.3% were owned outright and 22.5% were rented.
If your house sits empty between visits
A home nobody is in can't tell you something's wrong. That makes the basics matter more. NSW law requires working smoke alarms on every level of every home, rented or not, and they must meet Australian Standard AS 3786. If your alarms are hardwired, replacing them is licensed work. Our smoke alarms page explains the options.
Safety switches are the other one. NSW Fair Trading recommends having them on every circuit and testing them at least every six months. Pressing the test button yourself is fine; adding or replacing a safety switch needs an electrician.
Getting through an outage
The 2019 fire showed that power and phones can go at the same time. Keep a battery radio and a charged power bank, know how to switch off at the main, and keep Essential Energy's number written down, not just in your phone.
If you're thinking about a solar battery for backup, ask the electrician how it behaves when the grid is down before you buy, because not every system keeps the lights on during an outage. Any battery or inverter connection is licensed work.
If it were our place in Batemans Bay
Before you lock up and leave for a stretch, we'd test every safety switch and smoke alarm and make sure the board is labelled. If anything fails the test, book an electrician then, not on your next visit. It's the simplest way to come back to a house that's exactly as you left it.
