Queanbeyan, by the facts
A NSW city since 1972
Queanbeyan was proclaimed a township in 1838 and a city on 7 July 1972. Its population grew from 9,448 in 1961 to 37,511 in 2021.
Inter-war homes
Council's heritage controls say most dwellings in the Heritage Conservation Area are from the Inter War period, about 1915 to 1945, many of them bungalows.
Units and renters
In the suburb of Queanbeyan, 35.6% of homes were flats or apartments and 44.2% were rented at the 2021 Census.
River floods
The Queanbeyan River peaked at 8.4 metres in December 2010, and about 100 houses and businesses were evacuated.
Essential Energy's patch
Essential Energy's Queanbeyan-area zone substations sit in its South Eastern region, and it has run a new 132kV line from Transgrid's Queanbeyan supply point to a substation for South Jerrabomberra's growth.
What changes on this side of the border
The certificate. After the work, a NSW electrician must submit a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) within 7 days, through Building Commission NSW's eCert portal, and you get a copy. Canberra uses a different form.
The licence check. Use Service NSW's licence check, which searches by name, licence number or suburb, not Access Canberra's register.
The network. Outages and fallen lines go to Essential Energy on 13 20 80. It says to stay at least eight metres from fallen lines and always assume they're live.
Loans for upgrades. NSW Home Energy Saver interest-free loans can cover an EV charger and a switchboard upgrade, done by an electrician with a current NSW licence.
Old meter boards in older houses
Essential Energy says homes built before 1988 may have a meter board containing bonded asbestos, and that the board belongs to the property owner. Don't drill, cut or work on it. Tell any electrician it may contain asbestos, and ask how they'll manage the risk before they start.
Solar on a heritage roof
In the Heritage Conservation Area, council wants solar panels on a roof plane that isn't prominent, or on a garage or free-standing structure. Where that can't be done, panels must sit flush and take up no more than 50% of that roof plane.
Council runs a free heritage advisory service on the third Thursday of each month. It's worth a visit before you sign up for solar.
If we were in Queanbeyan
We'd make sure the electrician holds a NSW licence and lodges a CCEW for the job, whichever side of the border they're based. In an inter-war house, we'd have the meter board checked for asbestos before adding solar, a battery or an EV charger.

Tell us the job and your postcode. We match the licence-checked local electrician who does this kind of work, and they call you. No ring-around, and your number goes to them alone.
