Tuggeranong in facts

Nineteen suburbs, from 1974

Kambah came first in 1974, and Lake Tuggeranong was created in 1987. 79.5% of homes are separate houses, and 42.1% have four or more bedrooms.

Kambah and Mr Fluffy

In 2015 the Canberra Times reported Kambah had 102 Mr Fluffy homes, the most of any suburb. Southern Tuggeranong was built after the installer stopped work and is free of it.

Fire

The 18 January 2003 firestorm reached Kambah among other suburbs, and the Orroral Valley fire brought an emergency warning for Tharwa and the southern suburbs on 28 January 2020.

Hail

Hail up to 5 cm fell in Tuggeranong on 31 December 2006, and the 3 January 2022 supercell left 17,000 people across Tuggeranong and West Belconnen without power.

Cold winters

Frost is very common, and the temperature here has dropped as low as -8.4 °C.

Owners, mostly

46.0% of homes had a mortgage, 30.9% were owned outright and 20.6% were rented. Evoenergy runs the network and has a neighbourhood battery in Fadden.

Trees, lines and fire season

In the ACT, keeping trees on your land clear of power lines is the homeowner's job: at least 1 metre from the service line to the house and 1.5 metres from other lines, or 2 metres in bushfire prone areas.

Don't prune near a line yourself. Use a contractor qualified to work near power lines, and if a branch is already touching, call Evoenergy on 13 10 93.

Inside the house, the job before summer is making sure every circuit sits behind a working safety switch, so water or storm damage trips the power instead of leaving a fault live.

Heating a house in a cold valley

Electric heating is a big winter load in a three or four-bedroom house. If you're replacing old heaters with reverse cycle units, ask the electrician whether each needs its own circuit and whether the board has room for them.

What we'd do in Tuggeranong

We'd walk the yard before summer and look for branches near the line to the house, then book a qualified contractor if anything's close. In Kambah or another of the first suburbs, we'd also check the meter box for a Mr Fluffy tag before any electrical work starts.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is my Kambah house likely to have had Mr Fluffy?

Kambah had more Mr Fluffy homes than any other suburb, but that was still only about one in 53 of its houses. Affected homes must show a safety tag at the meter box and switchboard, so look there first.

Who's responsible for trees near my power line?

You are, for trees on your land. Evoenergy sets the clearances; leave the cutting to a contractor qualified to work near lines.

The storm's knocked out our power. Who do I call?

Evoenergy on 13 10 93 for fallen or damaged lines, and the SES on 132 500 for storm damage. If only your house is out, try the safety switch once, then call an electrician.
