Electricians in DubboBuilt for hot summers and big storms.
Dubbo's electrical jobs follow its weather. January averages a 33.6 degree top, the airport has hit 46.1, and one February storm in 2023 cut power to about 14,000 homes. Tell us the job and your postcode, and we'll match you with one licence-checked local electrician who does that work regularly, if we have one near you.

Why Dubbo homes need different things
Air conditioning isn't optional here, and a big split system or ducted unit is a serious load. Plenty of Dubbo houses weren't wired for it. The town has many red brick California Bungalows from the early 20th century, Victorian terraces mostly around Darling Street and a few Edwardian semis. A house that old may still have ceramic fuses and no safety switches, unless someone has upgraded it.
NSW Fair Trading strongly recommends that anyone in a home built before 2000 gets a licensed electrician to check whether safety switches are fitted. In a Dubbo bungalow, we'd treat that check as the first job, before any new air con circuit goes in.
What's local about Dubbo
Essential Energy runs the network
It's upgrading the high voltage lines in and around Dubbo, swapping some timber and concrete poles for taller steel ones. For outages, fallen wires or a tree on the lines, call 13 20 80 at any hour.
The 9 February 2023 storm
Golf ball hail and about 10,000 lightning strikes. Hail-clogged drains pushed water into roof linings, Orana Mall was evacuated and the SES took over 240 calls that evening.
Wind as well as hail
In early December 2020 gusts reached 106 km/h and one Dubbo house lost half its roof. Overhead service lines and roof-mounted gear cop it in storms like that.
Floods and fire
The council area was declared a disaster zone for flooding in August and September 2022, and again after the Dubbo and Warrumbungle bushfire from 27 November 2025.
Solar and charging on the poles
Dubbo was one of five towns where Essential Energy put batteries on power poles to store spare rooftop solar, and it has two sites in a trial of EV chargers mounted on existing poles.
Which jobs come up most in Dubbo?
Cooling circuits and board upgrades. A new air conditioner often means a new circuit, and sometimes a switchboard upgrade so the board can carry it safely.
After-storm checks. If water came through the ceiling around lights or fans, keep those circuits off and get them tested. Our storm and flood damage page explains what the electrician looks for.
Rental work. At the 2021 Census, 31.5% of occupied homes in the Dubbo Regional council area were rented. In NSW, any electrical fault in a rental counts as an urgent repair, and landlords must check smoke alarms every year. Electrical work for landlords sets out who does what.
What you can do, and what needs a licence
You can
- Press the test button on each safety switch twice a year and reset it.
- Unplug appliances one at a time to find what's tripping the power.
- Turn the main switch off if water is coming through near a light, as long as you can reach it from a dry spot.
Leave to a licensed electrician
- New circuits for air conditioning, and any switchboard work.
- Replacing or moving power points, lights, switches or ceiling fans.
- Testing anything that's had water in it before it's used again.
If it were our house in Dubbo
Before the next summer, we'd have an electrician look at the switchboard of any pre-2000 home, especially if a bigger air conditioner is on the list. One visit can answer whether the board has safety switches, whether it has room, and what needs doing first. It's a far better conversation to have in spring than during a heatwave.

Questions
Straight answers.
Who fixes a power outage in Dubbo?
If the street is out, Essential Energy does, and the number is 13 20 80. If only your place has lost power, look at your switchboard for a tripped safety switch, then call an electrician if it won't reset.
Can my old Dubbo house handle a ducted air conditioner?
It depends on the switchboard and the supply into the house. An electrician can check the board, the main cable and the existing load and tell you whether it needs work first.
Hail came through the ceiling near a downlight. Is it safe?
Treat it as unsafe. Turn that circuit or the main switch off if you can do it from a dry spot, and leave the fitting alone until a licensed electrician has dried and tested it.
