BYD home chargersPlug in and charge. No app, by design.

BYD Australia sells its own BYD AC Charger through dealerships, its online configurator when you order a BYD, and authorised retail partners. It comes in a 7 kW single phase and an 11 kW three phase version, with a 7.5 m cable fixed to the unit. It's deliberately simple: no app, no Bluetooth and no OCPP.

What simple means here

BYD says the current retail version is a plug-and-charge unit. You can't schedule it or watch it from your phone, and it won't join an outside charging platform. It does support RFID cards, so you can stop anyone without a card from using it.

BYD doesn't mention solar-aware charging. If you want the car to soak up spare solar automatically, or to wait for off-peak hours without you setting anything, that's a smart charger's job, and this one isn't built for it.

The rest of the spec sheet

BYD's spec table also lists a 3.5 kW single phase output on 16 A. The charger is rated IP54, measures 301 x 290 x 117 mm, weighs 4 to 4.5 kg depending on the version, and works from minus 25 to 50 degrees C. It carries the RCM, and the standard warranty is 3 years.

Your part, and the electrician's

You can

  • Order the charger with the car, or through a BYD dealer or retail partner.
  • Ask the dealer about supply in your state, since BYD notes availability can vary.
  • Measure from the parking spot to the charge port. The 7.5 m cable is generous, but check anyway.

Leave to a licensed electrician

  • Installing the charger. BYD says it must be fitted by a licensed electrician in line with local electrical regulations.
  • Confirming whether your supply is single or three phase.
  • Making room on the switchboard, or upgrading it.
  • Testing the work and giving you your state's certificate.

If it were our house

If you drive a BYD, have no solar and are happy for the car to charge whenever it's plugged in, the BYD charger is a sensible, simple pick, and ordering it with the car keeps things tidy. With solar or a time-of-use tariff, we'd look at a smart charger instead. Either way, get a charger electrician to look at the board before delivery day.
