Fronius WattpilotSolar-led charging. Mount it out of the sun.

The Wattpilot Flex Home is Fronius's wall charger for charging an electric car at home, in 11 kW and 22 kW versions. It can charge from as little as 1.38 kW and switches between 1 and 3 phase charging by itself to make the most of solar. Fronius says surplus solar charging needs additional components, so ask what goes in alongside it.

How it uses your solar

A low starting point means the Wattpilot can keep charging on a modest solar surplus. Eco Mode puts solar first, and Next Trip Mode charges just the right amount in time for your next trip.

The extra parts are the thing to pin down. Fronius says additional components are needed for surplus solar charging, so ask the electrician to name them in the quote and say where they'll go.

Where it goes on the wall

It's rated IP66 for indoor and outdoor use, but Fronius notes charging power may be limited in direct sunlight outdoors. A garage, a carport or a shaded wall is a better spot than a wall that cops full afternoon sun.

It measures 325 x 195 x 105 mm and weighs 4.1 kg (11 kW) or 5.4 kg (22 kW), with a 6 m cable and a Type 2 plug.

Phases and your supply

Fronius lists only the 11 kW and 22 kW versions, and talks about switching between 1 and 3 phase charging. If your home is single phase, ask the electrician what the Wattpilot will deliver on your supply before you order.

Control and users

You run it from the Solar.wattpilot app over built-in Wi-Fi (WLAN) or a LAN connection, and RFID cards give different people their own profiles. Fronius also makes the Wattpilot Go, which it calls a portable charging station, but we haven't collected its specs.

What to get in writing

  • The warranty period, which Fronius's Australian pages don't state.
  • Whether it supports OCPP, if you want an outside platform to manage it.
  • Whether the 6 m cable is fixed to the unit.
  • The extra parts for surplus solar charging, and where they'll be fitted.

Our take

If Fronius gear already runs your solar, the Wattpilot is a natural first look. We'd choose the mounting spot for shade and cable reach before picking the version, and we'd want the solar parts and warranty in writing before the electrician books the install. Fitting it is licensed work from start to finish.
