Sungrow EV chargerCheck your inverter before you check the brochure.

Sungrow's home and business charger is the AC22E-01. It runs at up to 7.4 kW on a single phase connection, or 11 or 22 kW on three phase. It gets the most out of solar when it's paired with one of Sungrow's own hybrid inverters, so the inverter already on your wall decides a lot of what it can do.

Why the inverter matters

Sungrow says the charger makes maximum use of solar with its SHRT, SHRS and SHT hybrid inverters. Some charging modes work only with an SHRT inverter connected directly, and other Sungrow inverters need a Sungrow iHomeManager in between.

If your solar is a different brand, ask the electrician exactly what the charger will and won't do with it before you order. Sungrow's documents are written around its own gear.

Power, phases and load management

On three phase, the installer configures it for 11 kW or 22 kW, and it switches phases automatically. Load management, where the charger watches the home's total use and backs off, needs an extra Sungrow Smart Energy Meter.

It connects by Wi-Fi, Ethernet or 4G, supports OCPP 1.6J and takes firmware updates over the air. Its datasheet lists the RCM, the compliance mark used in Australia.

Things to settle with the electrician

  • Which version you're getting. Sungrow's Australian page describes a socket version for separate cables and a shutter version, while the datasheet lists a Type 2 plug on a 5 m cable, with 7 m optional.
  • Where the external protection goes. Sungrow says a separate Type A or Type B RCD or RCBO and a circuit breaker are required, on top of the built-in 6 mA DC fault detection.
  • Whether you want the Smart Energy Meter for load management.
  • Wall or pole mount. It's rated IP65 and IK10, and works from minus 30 to 50 degrees C.
  • How you'll start a charge: plug and play, an RFID card or the app.
  • The warranty in writing. We couldn't find Sungrow's Australian warranty period.

What we'd do

If you already have a Sungrow hybrid inverter, this is the charger to look at first, because its solar features are designed around that setup. If you don't, compare it with chargers that read your solar on their own. Either way it's licensed work with extra protection gear, so the quote should list every part, not just the charger.

Is the Sungrow charger only for business?

No. Sungrow's Australian site lists the AC22E-01 as its AC charger for homes and businesses, alongside its larger DC chargers.
