Three charging modes
| Eco | Eco+ | Fast | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it charges | Blends spare solar with some grid power | Waits for free surplus solar | Full power, like an ordinary charger |
| If the sun goes in | Tops up from the grid when surplus drops below 1.4 kW | Pauses when too much is coming from the grid | Carries on regardless |
| Use it when | The car is home through the day | You want your own panels doing the work | You need range tonight |
What comes in the box, and what the installer adds
zappi ships with current clamps, one for single phase or three for three phase, which measure power flowing to and from the grid. That's how it knows how much solar is spare. Wi-Fi and Ethernet are built in.
myenergi says zappi has its own surge protection and PEN fault protection, so no earth rod is needed. The installer still fits a separate surge protection device on top. Once it's in, myenergi asks you to register the product, and the standard warranty is 3 years. It comes in black or white.
Tethered or untethered?
Tethered models have a Type 2 cable built in. Untethered ones come without a cable, and myenergi suggests those mainly for early Type 1 cars. Its Australian pages don't give the tethered cable length, so ask before you settle on where the unit mounts.
Control and sharing
The myenergi app sets timers, including a boost timer for off-peak rates, lets you control the charger remotely and shows import and export graphs. A 5 digit PIN can stop other people using it. OCPP support is now standard, so zappi can connect to an outside management platform that logs who charged, when and how much.
Where we'd start
If you have solar and the car is often parked at home while the panels are working, zappi earns its place. Ask an electrician who installs chargers where the clamps will go and whether the board has room for the circuit and the surge protection device. Choose tethered or untethered once you know exactly where the car parks.
