Gladstone, Queensland
Electricians in GladstoneIndustry-town homes and what people add to them.
Gladstone's industry has shaped its housing: the LNG project fed a population and housing boom, and Tannum Sands grew from 290 people in 1966 to 5,227 in 2021. So a lot of the electrical work here is about adding to fairly modern homes, like solar, batteries and EV chargers, alongside older-house repairs and storm damage. Outages and fallen lines go to Ergon Energy, and we match the job with one licence-checked local electrician, where we have one.

Adding solar, a battery or a charger
Under Ergon's basic connection offer, household solar and batteries are limited to 10 kVA of inverter capacity per phase, with exports capped at 5 kW per phase. Ergon also offers dynamic connections, which can let you export up to 10 kW per phase when the network has spare capacity, falling to 1.5 kW when it's busy.
If the combined system is 10 kVA or more, Queensland requires a generation signalling device, so Ergon can switch it off for a short time in an energy emergency. That applies to new and replacement systems alike.
For EV chargers, we couldn't confirm Ergon's current rules for home chargers on its own pages, so ask the electrician to check what applies to your connection before you buy one. EV charger installation explains what the job involves.

Jobs that come up in Gladstone
Solar, batteries and switchboard space. Even a newer home's board can run out of space once solar arrives. Switchboards for solar and EV chargers explains when you need more room.
Getting a house ready to rent or sell. If the power points have no approved safety switch, a landlord has 90 days from the start of a tenancy to fit one, and smoke alarms must meet the interconnected photoelectric rule.
A house that's been sitting empty. Before it's lived in again, it's worth having the smoke alarms tested and the safety switches checked.
Storm repairs. Wet fittings, damaged aerials and appliances hit by surges.
Storm tide or flood coming in?
If you're told to leave, switch off at the main switch on the way out, but only if the meter box is dry and you're not standing in water. Once you're back, nothing that got wet goes back on until a licensed electrician has tested it. Report fallen lines to Ergon on 13 16 70.
Our take for Gladstone
Plan solar, a battery and any future EV charger as one job, with one electrician who does all three, so the switchboard is sized once. Ask whether a dynamic connection would suit you. And if the house has been empty for a while, have the alarms and safety switches tested before anyone moves in.
