Horsham, Victoria
Electricians in HorshamBuilt for the heat, ready for the river.
Horsham gets about 25 days a year above 35 C, and the Wimmera River has split the town in two in a flood. Heat and water shape the electrical work here, along with plenty of older homes that weren't built for either. Tell us what you need, and if we have a licence-checked electrician near Horsham who does that kind of job, we'll pass it on.

Heatwave or flood: what each does to your electrics
| A run of hot days | The Wimmera comes up | |
|---|---|---|
| What tends to fail | Overloaded circuits, breakers that keep tripping, hot connections on old boards | Power points, air conditioner outdoor units and hot water services that sat in water |
| What you can do | Stagger big loads so the air conditioning, oven and dryer aren't all running at once | Main switch off, wet appliances unplugged, and keep away from a wet meter box |
| Who fixes it | An electrician, with dedicated circuits or a switchboard upgrade | A licensed electrician, who must check it before the power goes back on |
Summers that test old boards
About 25 days a year in Horsham pass 35 C, mostly in January and February, and the aerodrome's record is 47.9 C. A house running two or three air conditioners for days on end puts a steady load on circuits and connections, and old ones show it first: warm power points, a burning smell, a breaker that drops in the afternoon.
Any of those is a reason to call an electrician rather than just resetting and hoping. Power keeps tripping helps you narrow down which circuit and why.
Horsham's river, fire and network
The Wimmera
Horsham Rural City Council says the town has a history of flooding, from minor floods to the major ones of January 2011 and October 2022. In 2011 the river reached a record 4.71 m and over 1,000 residents were evacuated.
Powercor: 13 24 12
Horsham is on Powercor's network. Ring 13 24 12 for outages and fallen lines, and keep more than 8 to 10 metres away from any line on the ground, as Energy Safe Victoria advises.
Trees near the lines
Powercor flies LiDAR helicopters over the lines in Horsham and the Wimmera to measure how close trees are, as part of its year-round cutting program. On private property near its lines, it notifies owners in advance except for urgent safety work.
Fire on the fringe
On Black Saturday in 2009 about 5,700 ha burnt around Horsham's fringe, and eight homes were destroyed in the Haven area.
Town houses and rural blocks
Horsham grew from 6,388 people in 1947 to 15,262 in 2011, much of it from rural families moving into town. At the 2021 Census, 89.2% of homes were separate houses and 28.3% were rented, so the 2-yearly rental safety check, now required for every Victorian lease, matters to a lot of local landlords.
If you're on a rural block outside town, private power poles explains who looks after what between the road and the house.
Where we'd start in Horsham
Before summer, we'd have an electrician check that each air conditioner has a circuit that can carry it and that the board isn't running hot. If the house is anywhere near the river, we'd ask which gear could sit higher. And we'd save 13 24 12, because both the heat and the river tend to arrive with outages.

Questions
Straight answers.
Why does my breaker trip on hot afternoons?
Often because too much is running on one circuit, but it can also be a failing appliance or a worn connection. Reset it once with the big loads off. If it trips again, leave it off and get an electrician to find the cause.
Can I switch back on once the floodwater's gone?
Not until a licensed electrician has checked everything that got wet. Wiring and fittings can look dry and still be unsafe.
Who do I call when Horsham loses power?
Powercor on 13 24 12, or its outage map. If only your house is out, check the switchboard for a tripped safety switch first. Fire, smoke or injury: 000.
