Kalgoorlie, Western Australia
Electricians in KalgoorlieAt the far end of a 650 km line.
Kalgoorlie-Boulder gets its power down a single transmission line more than 650 km long, at the eastern end of Western Power's grid. When a storm destroyed five towers on it in January 2024, the town ran on other network assets and backup generators for nine days while people were asked to limit their use. Add the summer heat and homes going back to the gold rush, and the work here has its own pattern. Tell us what you need and your postcode, and we'll match it with one licence-checked local electrician if we have one.

What's different about electrical work in Kalgoorlie?
Heat, first. January is the hottest month, averaging a maximum of 33.6 °C, and when hot, dry north to north-easterly winds arrive, temperatures above 40 °C come nearly once a week, usually ended by a cool change from the south and sometimes a thunderstorm. That's air conditioning running hard for days, and older boards and circuits carrying more than they were designed for.
Then the supply. Western Power says the line into Kalgoorlie-Boulder has been hit by severe weather and bushfires before, and in July 2026 it signed an agreement aimed at strengthening the town's power resilience. Until that work shows up, a plan for a day without power is sensible.
And age. Kalgoorlie was established in 1893 during the gold rushes, and the Boulder townsite was gazetted in 1896, so houses here range from the very old to the brand new.

The jobs that come up most here
Air con circuits and board checks. Western Power's standard household supply is 63 amps on single phase. A second or bigger air conditioner may need its own circuit, and if the house would go over its supply, the contractor applies for an upgrade.
Ceiling fans. They draw a fraction of what air con does and take some pressure off it on the long hot runs. Ceiling fan installation covers what to sort out first.
Protecting appliances. If outages and storms worry you, ask your electrician about surge protection at the board.
Older homes. Fuses, no safety switches or tired wiring turn up in older houses anywhere, and in WA safety switches must protect every power point and lighting circuit before a sale settles.
What we'd do in Kalgoorlie
We'd get the board and the air con circuits checked in spring, before the first run of 40-degree days. And with one long line feeding the town, we'd have a plan for a day or two without power: torches, a charged power bank and a way to keep the fridge cold.

Questions
Straight answers.
Why was Kalgoorlie's power limited in January 2024?
A storm destroyed five towers on the single transmission line into Kalgoorlie-Boulder. While Western Power rebuilt it over nine days, the town ran on other network assets and backup generators, and customers were asked to limit their use.
Who do I call when the power's out in Kalgoorlie?
Western Power, on 13 13 51, for outages and fallen lines. If yours is the only house off, look at the switchboard for a tripped safety switch, then call an electrician.
My air con keeps tripping the power. What now?
Reset the breaker once, with the unit switched off. If it trips again, leave it off and get a licensed electrician to find out whether it's the unit, the circuit or the board. Power keeps tripping helps narrow it down.
