Electricians in Port MacquarieFrom flood reconnections to EV-ready new builds.

Port Macquarie has had five significant floods since March 2021, and each one leaves homes that can't be switched back on until an electrician has signed them off. At the other end of town, new estates like Sovereign Hills are wiring for solar and EV chargers from day one. Tell us your job and we'll match it with one licence-checked local electrician who does that work, where we have one.

Getting the power back on after a flood

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council counts four major floods between March 2021 and July 2022, including a 1 in 100 year event in March 2021, and another significant flood in May 2025. After the 2025 Mid North Coast floods, Essential Energy told electricians that every flooded home had to be inspected, tested and repaired, with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work lodged, before the power could go back on.

Reconnecting is a separate step. On the Essential Energy network only a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider, or Essential Energy itself, can reconnect a disconnected property. Damaged service lines, the cable from the pole to your house, were replaced only by Essential Energy in that flood guidance. A Level 2 electrician explains how that part works.

So the order is: licensed electrician inspects and repairs, CCEW lodged, then reconnection. Ask the electrician you're matched with whether they can arrange the Level 2 step or tell you who will.

What's specific to Port Macquarie

Network and fault line

Essential Energy runs the poles and wires. Report outages and fallen lines on 13 20 80, and call 000 first if anyone's life is at risk.

Homes built to let water through

After the 2021 flood, some Settlement Point Drive owners raised slabs, and one raised house lets floodwater pass through a ground-floor garage with living areas upstairs. In May 2025 the same street flooded again, though about 250 mm lower.

Fire as well as water

In the November 2019 bushfires thousands of customers, including in Port Macquarie Hastings, lost power, and over 400 poles were damaged across the network in five days. Another bushfire from 19 December 2025 brought a disaster declaration.

New estates

Sovereign Hills, started in July 2010, was expected to hold about 2,500 homes when complete. Port Macquarie was also one of five towns where Essential Energy put batteries on power poles to store spare rooftop solar.

The other jobs that come up here

Garages under raised homes. If your garage is designed to flood, the power points, freezer circuit and any EV charger down there need careful planning. An electrician can put outlets higher and give the downstairs its own circuits, so you can isolate it.

Chargers and solar in newer homes. In a newer estate home, adding an EV charger is often a straightforward circuit. NSW Home Energy Saver loans are interest-free, up to $15,000 over up to 10 years, and can cover an EV charger and a switchboard upgrade.

Townhouses and units. At the 2021 Census, 13.3% of occupied homes in the council area were semi-detached or townhouses and 9.6% were flats. Strata approval comes before any charger in a shared car park.

What we'd tell a neighbour

If your place has flooded before, we'd plan the downstairs wiring as if it will again: outlets up high, a separate circuit you can switch off, and nothing essential at floor level. And if the water does come, don't try to reconnect anything yourself. Get the electrician in first, keep the CCEW, and let the Level 2 provider or Essential Energy handle the reconnection.

Questions

Straight answers.

My house flooded. How long until the power's back on?

We can't promise a time. It depends on how quickly a licensed electrician can inspect, test and repair the wiring, lodge the CCEW, and then on the reconnection by a Level 2 provider or Essential Energy.

Who do I ring for a power outage in Port Macquarie?

Essential Energy on 13 20 80. Use the same number if you see a fallen line, and keep well back from it.

Can I get a loan for an EV charger in Port Macquarie?

NSW Home Energy Saver loans can cover an EV charger and a switchboard upgrade for eligible property owners, including landlords. Check the scheme's eligibility rules before you book.

How do I know the electrician is licensed?

Look them up on Service NSW's licence check or Verify NSW before work starts. Every electrician we match is licence-checked, but it takes a minute to see it for yourself.
