Rockhampton, Queensland

Electricians in RockhamptonHot summers, a big river and some very old cottages.

Rockhampton's summers push air conditioners and older wiring hard, and the Fitzroy River decides how low-lying suburbs fare in the wet. Cooling circuits, post-flood checks and ageing cottage wiring are the electrical jobs that matter most here. Outages and fallen lines go to Ergon Energy; we match the work inside your home with a licence-checked local electrician who does it regularly, where we have one.

Heat comes first

Rockhampton's January days average 32.6 degrees and the record is 45.3. Summer also brings thunderstorms. That combination is hard on homes where a split system, a pool pump and a second fridge have all been added to circuits laid out decades ago.

A larger air conditioner usually wants its own circuit, and an older board may have no room for one, or no safety switches at all. An electrician who does cooling circuits and board upgrades can tell you whether it's one job or two before anything's bought.

When the Fitzroy rises

The Fitzroy's highest recorded flood at Rockhampton reached 10.11 m in January 1918. In April 2017, after ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie, it peaked at 8.9 m, about 1,500 homes were affected, and power was proactively switched off to flood-affected areas as Depot Hill and Port Curtis went under.

That's worth knowing. If Ergon cuts supply to your street during a flood, it comes back when the network is safe, but your own wiring still needs testing if water reached it. The council says flooding is common here but most floods are minor and mainly close roads and bridges.

Lines down after a storm? Assume they're live

During Cyclone Marcia in February 2015, live power lines were down across Rockhampton and Yeppoon. Keep well away from any fallen line, including one tangled in a tree, and report it to Ergon on 13 16 70. Call 000 first if anyone's hurt or in danger.

Outages and supply problems: 13 22 96. Fallen powerlines and shocks: 13 16 70, any time. Ergon sent 500 technicians in to restore power after Marcia.

Old streets

Quay Street's historic quarter covers three city blocks, The Range has heritage-listed homes such as Clancholla and Kenmore House, and Allenstown's cottages date from block sales after the Canoona gold rush around 1862.

Renters

32.1% of occupied homes in the council area were rented at the 2021 Census. A rental without an approved safety switch for the power points needs one within 90 days after the tenancy starts.

Bushfire on the edge

In the 2018 Central Queensland bushfires, Gracemere was completely evacuated, sending its 8,000 residents to the Rockhampton Showgrounds.

The jobs Rockhampton homes need

Air conditioning circuits and board upgrades. See switchboard upgrades and appliance installation.

Ceiling fans. They take the edge off long hot nights for far less load than a split system. Ceiling fans covers what's involved.

Rewiring older cottages. Cable that's gone brittle in a hot roof space is a fault waiting to happen. Rewiring explains the signs.

Smoke alarms. Every Queensland home needs interconnected photoelectric alarms by 1 January 2027.

What we'd do before summer

Before you buy a new air conditioner, we'd get an electrician to look at the board and tell you whether it can take the extra circuit. If the answer is a board upgrade, do both in one visit and add safety switches at the same time. Then save Ergon's two numbers, because storm season follows the heat.

Questions

Straight answers.

Why was our power cut during the flood when our house stayed dry?

In big floods Ergon can switch off supply to affected areas for safety, as it did around Depot Hill and Port Curtis in 2017. It comes back when the network is safe. If water didn't reach your wiring, there's usually nothing more to do.

Can my old switchboard take another air conditioner?

It depends on the board, the supply to the house and what's already running. An electrician checks the spare capacity and space on the board, and tells you whether you need a new circuit, an upgrade or both.

Who do I call for a fallen powerline in Rocky?

Ergon Energy on 13 16 70, any hour. Stay well clear, keep others away and call 000 if anyone is in danger.
