Sale, Victoria

Electricians in SaleA town named for its floods.

Sale's first name was Flooding Creek, and the town earned it. It sits on the edge of a large wetland, and the floods of 1978, 1990 and 2007 are part of local memory. That, plus a high share of rented homes, drives a lot of the electrical work here. Tell us the job, and if we have a licence-checked local electrician who does it, they'll get it.

Flood damage: wait for the all-clear before switching on

Wellington Shire Council's advice is to have a licensed electrician check a significantly damaged property is safe before the power is restored. Until then, keep the main switch off and leave wet appliances unplugged. Keep clear of fallen power lines and keep others away, and take care with temporary generators.

Why Sale thinks about water

A post office called Flooding Creek opened here in 1848 and was renamed Sale in 1854. The first settler's property on the flood plain went under soon after he arrived in 1844.

The rivers haven't changed their habits. In June 2007, four major east coast lows hit in a row, and the last brought up to 300mm of rain and major riverine flooding across Wellington Shire. The Gippsland Lakes rose 1.3m above normal. The shire's waterways include the Thomson, Macalister, Avon and Latrobe rivers, so low-lying homes here should know where their power points, hot water unit and air conditioner outdoor unit sit.

AusNet Services: 13 17 99

Wellington Shire Council points residents to AusNet Services' Outage Tracker when the power goes out, and AusNet's faults line is 13 17 99. Report fallen lines there too, and keep more than 8 to 10 metres back.

Heat and frost

East Sale has recorded 44.6 C, on 25 January 2019, and -6.6 C, on 3 July 2017. Homes here need cooling and heating, and a switchboard that can carry both.

Old buildings

Sale had a building boom from about 1855 to 1865. In homes and shops that old, the wiring is always a later addition, so it's worth knowing roughly how old yours is.

A town with a lot of renters

At the 2021 Census, 33.1% of Sale's homes were rented and 6.9% were flats or apartments. That puts plenty of local landlords under Victoria's rental rules: an electrical safety check every 2 years for every lease from 13 October 2026, and circuit breakers and safety switches on the power and lighting circuits since 29 March 2023.

Since 25 November 2025, a rental also has to meet those standards at the time it's advertised. Renters can ask for the record of the last check, and the rental provider must hand it over within 7 days of a written request. Rental safety checks covers what's tested.

If we lived in Sale

We'd find out whether our street has flooded before, and if it has, ask an electrician about lifting outdoor power points and the air conditioner's outdoor unit above that line. After any flood, we'd wait for a licensed electrician before switching back on, exactly as the council says. If we owned a rental, we'd book the check before the tenant had to ask.

Questions

Straight answers.

Who do I call when Sale loses power?

AusNet Services on 13 17 99, or its Outage Tracker. If the neighbours have power and you don't, check your switchboard for a tripped safety switch. Anything burning or anyone hurt: 000.

Can I run a generator after a flood in Sale?

Carefully, and never connected to the house wiring unless an electrician has fitted a proper inlet. The council warns people to take care with temporary generators. If the house flooded, have the wiring checked before anything goes back into a power point.

I rent in Sale. Can I see the last electrical check?

Yes. The rental provider must keep a record of the most recent check and give it to you within 7 days of a written request. Before you sign, they must also tell you the date of the last check and anything outstanding from it.
