Shepparton, Victoria
Electricians in SheppartonFlood-ready, summer-ready, and safe to switch back on.
In Shepparton, the electrical question that matters most is what to do after the river comes up. The Goulburn has flooded the city again and again, most recently in October 2022, when even Mooroopna's zone substation went under. The other big jobs are air conditioning on older boards and bringing post-war homes up to date. Tell us what's going on and, if we have a licence-checked local electrician who handles it, we'll pass it on.

Water got in? Keep the power off
If floodwater has been inside, through the garage or around the meter box, leave the main switch off and don't plug anything back in. A licensed electrician needs to check the wiring, power points and anything that sat in water before the power goes back on. If water is still around the meter box, don't go near it.
Shepparton's flood history, and what it means for wiring
Greater Shepparton City Council lists major Goulburn River floods in 1916, 1917, 1939, 1956, 1958, 1974, 1993, 2010 to 2012 and October 2022. In 2022, Shepparton, Mooroopna and Murchison all had major flooding, and across Victoria 5,017 homes and businesses were affected.
Damage from water in wiring doesn't always show straight away. Power points near the floor, hot water units and air conditioner outdoor units are the usual casualties, so have them tested rather than trusting that they seem to work. Storm and flood damage covers the repair side.
Shepparton's network, floods and heat
Powercor: 13 24 12
Shepparton and Mooroopna are on Powercor's network. Outages and fallen lines go to 13 24 12, and Energy Safe Victoria says to keep more than 8 to 10 metres from any line on the ground.
The substation that flooded
In October 2022 the Mooroopna zone substation, which supplies about 10,688 homes and businesses in Mooroopna, Tatura, Ardmona and parts of Shepparton, flooded and had to be switched off. Powercor has since built a permanent levee about 310 metres long around it, designed for a one in 200 year flood.
Summer heat
Shepparton Airport's record is 46.2 C, and January afternoons average 32.1 C. Air conditioning isn't optional here, and several units on one older board is where trips and hot connections start.
Post-war streets
Over 1000 Housing Commission houses went up between 1946 and 1955, and the population more than doubled between 1947 and 1971. Victoria's Asbestos Hub says a home built or renovated before 1990 likely contains asbestos, and WorkSafe Victoria names switchboards as a typical place for it.
The jobs that come up most
Post-flood checks and repairs, sometimes with a switchboard upgrade when the old board got wet.
Dedicated circuits for split systems and ducted air conditioning, so one unit starting up doesn't drop the kitchen.
Safety switches and new boards for older homes in the post-war streets of Shepparton and Mooroopna. If yours has the original fuse board, mention any dark backing panel when you book.
Where we'd start in Shepparton
Know where your main switch is and how you'd reach it with water around. If the board still has old fuses, we'd upgrade it on a dry day rather than after the next flood, and ask the electrician whether it can sit higher. Before summer, we'd get the air conditioning circuits checked too.

Questions
Straight answers.
Can I turn the power back on once the floodwater's gone?
Not until a licensed electrician has checked everything that got wet. Wiring and fittings that look dry can still hold moisture and silt.
Who do I call when Shepparton's power goes out?
Powercor on 13 24 12, for outages and fallen lines. If only your house is out and nothing has flooded, check the switchboard for a tripped safety switch first.
Does an older Mooroopna house need a new switchboard for air con?
Possibly. Old fuse boards often have no safety switches and no room for new circuits. An electrician can tell you after a short look whether the board, the circuits or both need work.
