Taree, New South Wales
Electricians in TareeAfter the river broke its 1929 record.
In May 2025 the Manning River at Taree peaked at 6.5 metres, half a metre above the 1929 record, and floodwater ran into the CBD. Since then, a lot of Taree's electrical work has been about drying out, testing and reconnecting homes, between bushfire seasons that have also cut power. Tell us where you are and what happened, and we'll match the job with one licence-checked local electrician who does this work, where we have one.

Your power after a flood, in order
Leave it off
Don't switch on anything the water reached, even if the street has power again. Keep clear of wet meter boxes and fallen lines, and call 000 if anyone is in danger.
Licensed inspection and repairs
After the 2025 Mid North Coast floods, Essential Energy told electricians that every flooded home had to be inspected, tested and repaired before the power could go back on.
The CCEW goes in
The electrician lodges a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. Essential Energy's flood briefing had it lodged through its Essential Connections portal.
Reconnection
Only a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider or Essential Energy can reconnect a disconnected property, and a damaged service line is replaced by Essential Energy.
Taree and the Manning
A river that rises fast
Upstream at Wingham, the Manning rose about 13 metres in two days in May 2025, peaking at 14.65 m. In March 2021 it reached 5.65 metres at Taree, and evacuations were ordered for Wingham, Cundletown and Dumaresq Island.
Raised homes weren't always enough
In Glenthorne, across the river from the CBD, some homes built to the council's elevation standards still flooded in May 2025.
Rain records
Taree recorded 305 mm in 24 hours on 7 July 2022, its wettest day since records began in 1881.
Fire seasons back to back
The MidCoast had three separate bushfire disaster declarations between November 2025 and February 2026. In the November 2019 fires, Essential Energy reported thousands of MidCoast customers without power.
Who to call
Essential Energy runs the network: 13 20 80 for outages and lines down. For flood or storm help, the SES is on 132 500.
Rebuilding the wiring smarter
If your house flooded, the rebuild is the time to change where things sit. Ask the electrician about moving the switchboard and power points higher, giving the lower level its own circuits so it can be switched off on its own, and keeping appliances like freezers off the floor. Our storm and flood damage page covers what a proper post-flood check includes.
At the 2021 Census, 48.1% of occupied MidCoast homes were owned outright. If yours has been in the family a long time, the switchboard may never have been upgraded. Essential Energy says homes built before 1988 may have a meter board containing bonded asbestos, and that the board belongs to the property owner, so it's worth knowing what you have before a flood or fire forces the question.
What we'd tell a Taree neighbour
If the water came in last time, plan for it coming in again: board and outlets up high, the downstairs on its own circuit, and copies of every CCEW kept somewhere dry. If you're on higher ground, use the quiet months to get an old switchboard checked, so a storm or fire outage doesn't find its weak spots for you.

Questions
Straight answers.
Who reconnects my power after the flood in Taree?
A Level 2 Accredited Service Provider or Essential Energy, once a licensed electrician has inspected, tested and repaired the wiring and lodged the CCEW.
Our house is raised but water still got in. What should change?
Ask the electrician to move the switchboard and power points as high as practical and put anything below the living floor on its own circuit. Some Glenthorne homes built to the elevation rules still flooded in 2025, so plan for the worst level you've seen.
Who do I call when the power's out in Taree?
Essential Energy on 13 20 80. If the outage is just your house, an electrician is the right call.
