Townsville, Queensland
Electricians in TownsvilleAfter the water, and before the next wet season.
In Townsville, a lot of electrical work traces back to three things: the wet season, the age of the house, or a new one going up. Floodwater, storm damage and old boards without safety switches all need a licensed electrician, while outages and fallen lines belong to Ergon Energy. Tell us the job and we'll match it with one licence-checked local electrician who does that work regularly, if we have one near you.

Water came through a ceiling, wall or light fitting?
Leave that circuit off, or the main switch if you can reach it without standing in water. The Queensland Reconstruction Authority says to get a licensed electrician to check the wiring if water has come through light fittings or into the roof space or walls after a cyclone, and that an electrician's certificate may be needed before power is reconnected to a badly damaged home. A line down in the street is Ergon's job: stay clear and ring 13 16 70.
What's different about electrical work in Townsville?
The 2019 monsoon flood is still the reference point for many homes here. More than 16,000 residences lost power and 3,299 residential properties were affected by floodwater, with Rosslea, Hermit Park and Idalia among the worst hit. Power points, wiring and switchboards that sat in water don't come good once they dry, so a proper test matters before anything goes back on.
Then there's the house itself. Historian Henry Reynolds remembered most Townsville houses standing on stumps in 1965, and plenty of those homes are still lived in. Queensland's first statewide cyclone building rules only arrived in 1975, after Cyclone Althea. An older raised home can have a board that predates safety switches, cable run under the floor and through the roof, and circuits added bit by bit over decades.
At the other end, the city keeps spreading west and north. The 5,000-lot North Shore Estate and the Elliot Springs community, expected to house 26,000 people by 2057, are where EV chargers, solar and batteries can be planned into the switchboard from day one.
Townsville at a glance
Your network is Ergon Energy
Townsville is outside South East Queensland, so Ergon runs the poles and wires. Fallen powerlines and electric shocks: 13 16 70, 24 hours a day. Outages and supply problems: 13 22 96. Assume any fallen line is live.
Cyclone season
Officially 1 November to 30 April. Cyclone Kirrily in January 2024 left nearly 34,000 homes and buildings without power, mostly in Townsville.
Solar in Wind Region C
Townsville is in cyclone Wind Region C. The Queensland Reconstruction Authority says panels, aerials and satellite dishes there should be fixed through the roof sheeting into the roof structure, not just to the sheeting.
Lots of renters
At the 2021 Census, 36.6% of occupied homes in the council area were rented. If a rental has no approved safety switch for the power points, the owner must have one installed within 90 days after the tenancy starts.
Long, warm nights
December averages a 31.5 degree maximum and a 24.1 degree minimum at the airport, so fans and air conditioning run hard, often on circuits that were never planned for them.
The jobs that tend to come up here, and why
Flood and storm repairs. Anything that's been wet gets tested before it's used again, from the power points in a downstairs room to the pool pump. Storm, flood and surge damage covers what an electrician checks.
Safety switches and old switchboards. Older raised homes may have no safety switch on the power points at all. Queensland's sale and rental rules make that a live issue, and an electrician generally can't do installation work in a home without one unless the job includes fitting it. A switchboard upgrade sorts protection and spare room together.
Smoke alarms before 1 January 2027. Every Queensland home, owner-occupied included, needs interconnected photoelectric alarms by then. Queensland's smoke alarm law explains what qualifies.
Fans and cooling circuits. Ceiling fans are the simplest way to move air on a still night, and an electrician can tell you whether the circuit can take another one.
EV chargers and solar in the new estates. Ergon offers dynamic solar connections that can allow exports of up to 10 kW per phase when the network has spare capacity, dropping to 1.5 kW when exports need limiting. Ask about it before the board fills up.
What we'd do in Townsville
Before the wet season, we'd press the test button on every safety switch, check the smoke alarms against the 2027 rule, and save both Ergon numbers in every phone in the house. If the board has no safety switches on the power points, we'd book that upgrade in the dry months rather than the week after a storm, when everyone else is calling too.

Questions
Straight answers.
Who do I call when the power goes out in Townsville?
If the neighbours are dark too, it's Ergon Energy on 13 22 96. A fallen line or an electric shock goes to Ergon on 13 16 70, or 000 if someone's life is at risk. If only your house is out, check the switchboard for a tripped switch, then call an electrician.
Our house took water in a flood. Can we switch the power back on?
Not until a licensed electrician has checked it. The QRA's advice is to have the wiring checked if water came through light fittings or into the roof space or walls, and a badly damaged home may need an electrician's certificate before it's reconnected.
Do I need a safety switch to sell or rent out my Townsville home?
A Queensland seller must tell the buyer in writing whether an approved safety switch protects the power points, and if it doesn't, the new owner has 90 days to fit one. Landlords have 90 days from the start of a tenancy.
What paperwork should I get after the work?
A certificate of testing and compliance from the licensed electrical contractor who connects the work. It shows the installation tested, the test date and their contractor licence number, so keep it with the house papers.
