Warragul, Victoria

Electricians in WarragulA growing town on a bigger substation.

Warragul and Drouin are growing fast, and AusNet has just doubled the capacity of the substation that feeds them. Most electrical jobs here are additions to newer homes: chargers, solar, batteries and extra circuits. The older streets near the town centre have different needs. Send us the job, and if we have a licence-checked local electrician who does that work, they'll get it.

A town that keeps adding houses

Warragul is 102 km east of Melbourne. Much of the early town went up in brick in the 1880s, after the railway arrived in 1878, and growth has been steady since the war. At the 2021 Census, 37.4% of Warragul homes and 40.1% of Drouin homes were owned with a mortgage, and close to nine in ten Warragul homes were separate houses.

Newer houses usually come with modern switchboards and safety switches, so the work is adding to them. Older places near the centre are where you'll find original boards and wiring that's been extended more than once.

Warragul's network and supply

AusNet Services: 13 17 99

Warragul and Drouin are on AusNet's network. Ring 13 17 99 for faults and fallen lines, or report damage to a pole or line online. Energy Safe Victoria says to stay more than 8 to 10 metres from a fallen line.

A bigger substation

AusNet scheduled its Warragul zone substation upgrade for 28 April 2026, replacing two transformers with one larger unit to double capacity for new housing connections and hot-day peak demand. About 17,352 customers across 27 towns, including Drouin, Yarragon and Longwarry, were due to lose power overnight while it was connected.

Planned outages

AusNet tells customers about planned work by letter or SMS, using the contact details your retailer holds, so keep those current. Its Outage Tracker shows both planned and unplanned outages.

Life support

If someone at home relies on life support equipment, AusNet runs a separate priority line on 1800 818 832.

Solar, batteries and chargers on AusNet

Since 1 October 2024, rooftop solar up to 200 kW that's installed, upgraded, repaired or replaced on AusNet's network needs a solar emergency backstop, and that needs the inverter connected to the internet. Supply, solar and metered connection applications all go through AusNet's EnergyConnect portal, so ask who'll lodge yours.

For an EV charger, Solar Victoria says any electrician can install one, though it's best to choose one with experience installing them. EV charger installation covers the board and supply questions.

What we'd do in Warragul

In a newer home, we'd have the electrician check spare switchboard space and the supply before buying a charger or battery, and make sure the solar inverter is set up to stay online. In an older house near the centre, we'd start with the switchboard. Either way, 13 17 99 goes in the phone before summer.

Questions

Straight answers.

Who do I call when the power goes out in Warragul?

AusNet Services on 13 17 99, or check its Outage Tracker. If only your house is dark, look for a tripped safety switch on your switchboard first. Fire, smoke or injury is 000.

My solar inverter keeps dropping offline. Does that matter here?

It can. On AusNet's network, the solar emergency backstop relies on the inverter being connected to the internet. An electrician or your solar installer can check the connection and settings.

Do you have electricians in Drouin?

None work for us. If a licence-checked electrician who does your kind of job covers Drouin, we pass the job on.
