Ballina, New South Wales
Electricians in BallinaAt the mouth of the river, with the tide to watch.
Ballina floods from the Richmond River, from local creeks and from high ocean levels, and NSW SES says flooding is worse when the river peak meets a high tide. Add ex-cyclones and a lot of townhouses, and the electrical work here has its own pattern. Tell us what you need and we'll match the job with one licence-checked local electrician who does that work, if we have one nearby.

Water rising, or a line down after a storm?
If water is coming into the house and you can reach the main switch without standing in water, switch it off. Never wade near a submerged power point, meter box or fallen line. Report lines down to Essential Energy on 13 20 80 and treat them as live. For flood or storm help call the SES on 132 500, and call 000 if anyone is in danger.
What makes Ballina different
River, creeks and ocean
Ballina sits at the mouth of the Richmond River, whose floodplain covers over 1,000 square kilometres. In a flood bigger than the 1 in 100 year event, NSW SES says much of central Ballina would be under water.
2022 and 2025
Ballina Shire was declared for the floods from 22 February 2022, and on 30 March 2022 a residential estate was submerged. In March 2025 ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred left more than 38,000 Northern Rivers homes and businesses without power, with the worst network damage between Tweed Heads and Yamba.
Wind events
On 3 June 2010 a small tornado at Lennox Head, 11 km away, severely damaged thirty homes.
Essential Energy runs the lines
Ballina had outages in the November 2019 bushfires too. Outages, fallen lines and trees on wires go to Essential Energy on 13 20 80.
Townhouse country
At the 2021 Census, 20.7% of occupied homes in Ballina Shire were semi-detached, row or terrace houses or townhouses, and 26.6% were rented.
The jobs that come up most in Ballina
Testing and repairs after water. If floodwater or storm water reached wiring, an electrician needs to inspect, test and repair it before it's used. On the North Coast, that ends with a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work and, if the supply was cut, reconnection by a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider. Our storm and flood damage page has the detail.
Lifting what can be lifted. After 2022, the Resilient Homes Program offered Ballina owners help to raise or retrofit homes, though applications for those grants closed on 14 August 2026. Moving power points and the switchboard above the likely water level is still worth asking about in any renovation.
Townhouses and strata. Many townhouse complexes are strata schemes, so an EV charger in your garage may need the owners corporation's approval and a look at shared wiring. NSW Parliament has passed a bill giving owners the right to install EV charging on their own lot without unreasonable objection, but the government's release gave no start date.
Rentals. A NSW landlord has to repair a faulty safety switch as an urgent repair. At the start of a tenancy, the condition report records whether one is fitted and working.
Our take for Ballina
If you're low-lying, find out where your switchboard and lowest power points sit compared with past flood heights, and have an electrician plan the move up before you renovate anything else. In a townhouse, talk to the strata manager before you get charger quotes, so the electrician can quote for the right cable run the first time.

Questions
Straight answers.
Who do I call when the power's out in Ballina?
Essential Energy on 13 20 80, for outages and fallen lines. If only your home has no power, try your safety switch once, then call an electrician.
Can I get an EV charger in my Ballina townhouse?
Usually, if the complex agrees. Find out if your complex is a strata scheme, get approval if it is, and ask the electrician to look at the switchboard that feeds your garage.
The street power is back after the flood. Can I switch on?
Not if water reached your wiring, power points or switchboard. Leave it off until a licensed electrician has inspected and tested it.
