Bendigo, Victoria

Electricians in BendigoGold rush houses, modern loads.

Bendigo's electrical work is shaped by its gold rush houses. A miners' cottage in Golden Square or Ironbark needs a different electrician from a new build on the edge of town, and in a Heritage Overlay, changes to the outside of the house can need a planning permit. Send us the job and we'll pass it to one licence-checked local electrician who works on older homes, if we have one nearby.

Old houses, new loads

The 1850s gold boom left Bendigo with a large stock of Victorian-era buildings. Local architect William Vahland's cottage design, with its central door and hallway, sash windows and iron-lace verandah, spread right across Victoria. In 2023 the council assessed 229 gold rush era houses and found 156 worth local heritage protection, clustered around old mining sites from Golden Square and Ironbark to Long Gully and Quarry Hill.

Houses like these predate household electricity, so every wire in them was added later, sometimes in several rounds. That's why the common jobs here are tracing old circuits, adding safety switches and bringing the switchboard up to date before anything big goes on it.

Changing the outside of a heritage home

The City of Greater Bendigo protects local heritage places through the Heritage Overlay in its planning scheme. A planning permit is needed to externally alter a building in the overlay, unless the work is covered by the council's exemptions plan for minor works. Solar panels, a new meter box position, outdoor lights or an EV charger on the front wall may all count.

Check with council before you commit. An electrician who works in these streets will usually raise it, but the permit is the owner's to get.

Bendigo's network, storms and fire

Powercor: 13 24 12

Bendigo is on Powercor's network, which covers central and western Victoria. Ring 13 24 12 for outages and fallen lines, and keep more than 8 to 10 metres from a line on the ground, as Energy Safe Victoria advises.

Tornado and hail

The May 2003 tornado through Eaglehawk and California Gully destroyed 8 homes and left up to 18,000 without power. In January 2023, hail came through roofs and skylights, and Eaglehawk logged more VICSES requests than anywhere else in the state.

Flash floods

Bendigo flooded in March and September 2010, October 2022 and January 2024. Water through a ceiling can reach light fittings and wiring, so switch that circuit off and get it checked before it's used.

Fire on the edge of town

On Black Saturday a fire burned into Long Gully and Eaglehawk, destroying around 61 houses. Powercor now flies LiDAR helicopters over the lines around Bendigo as part of its bushfire mitigation program.

Hot days, frosty nights

Bendigo Airport has hit 45.9 C, yet it averages 26.1 nights a year below zero. That means air conditioning in summer and electric heating in winter, often on boards sized for neither. Powercor says winter demand is rising across its network as households switch to electric heating and transport.

If you're swapping gas heating or cooking for electric, have an electrician check the board and the supply first. Gas to induction explains what that check covers.

If we lived in a Bendigo cottage

We'd get the switchboard and wiring assessed before the renovation plans are final, not after the plasterer has been. If the house is in a Heritage Overlay, we'd ask council about anything that changes the outside, like solar or moving the meter box, before paying a deposit. And we'd keep 13 24 12 handy for storm season.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is my Bendigo house in a Heritage Overlay?

The City of Greater Bendigo's planning scheme shows which places are covered, and its heritage planning team can tell you. Ask before any outside electrical work, because a permit may be needed unless the work falls under the council's exemptions.

Who do I ring when the power's out in Bendigo?

Powercor on 13 24 12, if the street is out or a line is down. If it's only your house, check the switchboard first. If anything is burning or someone's hurt, call 000.

Do old miners' cottages need a full rewire?

Not always. It depends on what's in the walls now, not the date on the facade. An electrician can test the circuits and tell you which are worth keeping. Rewiring covers what's involved.

Who checks the work when it's finished?

Your electrician gives you a Certificate of Electrical Safety. For major work like consumer mains or solar, a licensed electrical inspector has to check it before it can be switched on.
