Electricians in CairnsBuilt for the heat, tested by the wet.

In Cairns, the wet season does more to electrical systems than anything else. Water finds its way into outdoor power points, pumps and garden lights, and storms bring trees down onto lines. Faults in your home need a licensed electrician; outages and fallen lines belong to Ergon Energy. We match your job with one licence-checked local electrician who handles that kind of work, where we have one.

What makes Cairns different?

Rain, and a lot of it. The Cairns station averages 1,958.1 mm a year, with about 15 to 16 rain days a month from January to March, and afternoon humidity climbs to 71% in February. Moisture in an outdoor fitting, a garden light or a pond pump is a classic cause of a safety switch that trips in the wet and behaves itself in the dry.

Cyclones and floods. Cyclone Jasper's flooding in December 2023 pushed the Barron River past its March 1977 record, and Freshwater Creek broke its banks, threatening Redlynch, Brinsmead and lower Freshwater. When Cyclone Larry crossed near Innisfail in 2006, most of the damage in Cairns came from fallen power lines and trees hitting houses.

A long, thin city with more units than most regional centres. Cairns stretches from Edmonton to Ellis Beach, with new estates on old cane land, and 15.7% of occupied homes in the council area were flats or apartments at the 2021 Census. In a unit, talk to the body corporate before any work that touches the main board or common areas.

After a flood or cyclone, the power stays off until it's checked

If water has been through the house, or came in through a light fitting or into the walls, switch off at the main switch only if you can reach it dry and safely. A licensed electrician has to check the wiring before it goes back on. Keep well away from any line brought down by a tree, assume it's live, and report it to Ergon on 13 16 70.

Cairns essentials

Network: Ergon Energy

Fallen lines and shocks go to 13 16 70 at any hour, and an outage across the street to 13 22 96. If anyone's life is at risk, 000 comes first.

Cyclone country

Get Ready Queensland says communities within 50 km of the coast from Bundaberg to Thursday Island, Cairns included, are the most susceptible to cyclones. The official season is 1 November to 30 April.

Panels, aerials and dishes

Cairns is in Wind Region C, where the QRA says rooftop solar, aerials and satellite dishes should be fixed through the sheeting into the roof structure, with connections suited to the home's wind rating. Homes built before the 1990s may not have a wind classification at all.

Renting

35.0% of occupied homes in the council area were rented in 2021. Landlords must test and clean every smoke alarm within 30 days before a tenancy starts, and can't hand that job to the tenant.

Solar export limits

Ergon's basic connection offer caps household inverters at 10 kVA per phase and exports at 5 kW per phase.

Jobs that tend to come up in Cairns

Tripping in the wet. Outdoor power points, garden lighting and pool or pond pumps are the usual suspects. Start with power keeps tripping, then get someone who does fault finding if it keeps happening.

Weatherproof outdoor power. Fittings outside need the right covers and the right spot, away from where water pools. Outdoor power points explains the options.

Fans and cooling. Warm nights most of the year mean fans and split systems run constantly, sometimes on circuits that already carry a lot. Ceiling fans covers what's involved.

Smoke alarms in houses and units. Every Queensland home, townhouse and unit needs interconnected photoelectric alarms by 1 January 2027. Interconnected smoke alarms explains how they talk to each other.

Storm and flood repairs. Testing wet wiring and appliances, and replacing what can't be saved.

If we lived in Cairns

We'd get any outdoor power point, pump or garden light that trips in the wet looked at during the dry season, while there's time to find it properly. Then we'd sort the smoke alarms well before January 2027 and keep Ergon's 13 16 70 on the fridge for cyclone season.

Questions

Straight answers.

My safety switch only trips when it rains. What's going on?

Usually water is getting into something outside: a power point, a light, a pump or a cable joint. An electrician who does fault finding tests the circuits one at a time to find it. Don't keep resetting it, because the trip is doing its job.

A tree has brought a line down near my house. Who do I call?

Ergon Energy on 13 16 70, and 000 if anyone is in danger. Stay well back and keep others away. Once Ergon has made the line safe, an electrician can deal with any damage inside the house or at your switchboard.

Do units in Cairns need interconnected smoke alarms too?

Yes. Queensland's rule covers homes, townhouses and units by 1 January 2027. In a unit block, check with the body corporate about any alarms or wiring in common areas.

Can I add more solar to my Cairns home?

It depends on your connection. Ergon's basic offer allows up to 10 kVA of inverters and 5 kW of exports per phase, and new or replacement systems of 10 kVA or more need a generation signalling device. An electrician or solar installer can check what your home allows.
