Castlemaine, Victoria

Electricians in CastlemaineCareful work in an old town.

Castlemaine had 6,935 people in 1871 and 6,751 in 2011, and that tells you a lot about its houses. Much of the town is old, a fair bit is heritage listed, and most homes are long-held separate houses. Careful work on old wiring and switchboards is the heart of the local job list. Where we have a licence-checked electrician nearby who does that work, we'll match you with them.

An old town that kept its houses

Gold was found at Specimen Gully in 1851, the town was surveyed in 1852, and Castlemaine's utility and service buildings were substantially built by 1875. In 1995 the Victorian Heritage Register listed 27 of its buildings.

At the 2021 Census, 93.9% of homes were separate houses and 46.7% were owned outright. Long-held houses are where original wiring and switchboards tend to survive, sometimes with newer circuits tacked on. Before anything big goes in, it pays to know what's already in the walls.

What to ask before work on an old Castlemaine house

  • Can you test the existing wiring and tell me which circuits are worth keeping?
  • Could the switchboard backing contain asbestos, and how would you handle it?
  • Will any of this change the outside of the house, and might that need a heritage approval?
  • How will you run new cable through solid walls or old ceilings without wrecking the finishes?
  • Is any of it prescribed work that needs an inspector before it's switched on?
  • When will I get the Certificate of Electrical Safety?

Castlemaine's network, heritage and weather

Powercor: 13 24 12

Castlemaine is on Powercor's network. Outages and fallen lines go to 13 24 12, and Energy Safe Victoria says to stay more than 8 to 10 metres from any line that's down. After the lightning storms of 2 February 2025, 81 Castlemaine customers were still off supply the next morning.

Bushfire

Bushfires hit Mount Alexander Shire in January 2026, with recovery focused on Harcourt and surrounds. Powercor's LiDAR helicopters scanned the lines around Castlemaine, Maldon and Bendigo in March 2025 as part of its bushfire mitigation program. If fire or smoke has reached the house, have the wiring checked before relying on it.

Heritage overlay

Mount Alexander Shire Council applies a Heritage overlay to places on the Victorian Heritage Register or identified in its planning scheme. Ask the council before solar panels, a new meter box position or outdoor lighting changes the look of a listed place.

Our take for Castlemaine

In an older house, we'd pay for a proper test of the wiring and board before planning anything else, then fix what's needed in one go rather than piece by piece. If the place is heritage listed, we'd talk to council before the electrician quotes on anything outside. And we'd keep Powercor's 13 24 12 saved for storm and fire season.

Questions

Straight answers.

Does every old Castlemaine house need rewiring?

No. Some old houses have been rewired well, and some haven't. A licensed electrician can test the circuits and tell you which parts are sound. Old wiring explains the warning signs.

Who do I ring when the power goes out in Castlemaine?

Powercor, on 13 24 12, for outages and fallen lines. If it's only your house, check the switchboard for a tripped safety switch first. Fire, smoke or injury: 000.

Do I need council approval for solar on a heritage house?

It depends on how the place is listed and what changes. Mount Alexander Shire Council's planning team can tell you whether the Heritage overlay applies and what it means for your plans.
