Why Leopold's age matters
When industry at Moolap and Point Henry turned Leopold into a dormitory suburb for Geelong, houses went up fast. Homes from that era often came with a small switchboard: only a few circuits, rewireable fuses or early circuit breakers, and protection only where it was required at the time. Air conditioning, an induction cooktop or an EV charger can push a board like that past what it was built for.
They also predate 1990, and the Victorian Government's Asbestos Hub says homes built or renovated before then likely contain asbestos. WorkSafe Victoria lists switchboard backing among the usual places to find it, so it's handled with care.
Leopold at a glance
Two doublings
The population doubled during 1961 to 1971 and again during 1971 to 1981.
Water around the edge
Leopold sits on higher ground but has waterholes and swamps around its edge, and its farmland borders the Lake Connewarre wetlands.
Owner-occupied
At the 2021 Census, 92.2% of homes were separate houses; 41.6% were mortgaged, 37.4% owned outright and 18.1% rented.
Storm-exposed
In the 2021 Victorian storms, the Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast municipalities were the most impacted.
Powercor
Leopold is on the Bellarine, part of Powercor's network. Faults: 13 24 12.
What you can do, and what's an electrician's job
You can
- Press the test button on each safety switch.
- Note which appliances were running when the power tripped.
- Swap batteries in battery-powered smoke alarms.
- Keep the meter box door clear and closed.
Leave to a licensed electrician
- Replacing fuses with circuit breakers and safety switches.
- Anything on the switchboard or its backing panel.
- Adding circuits for air conditioning, cooking or an EV charger.
- Installing or replacing a hardwired smoke alarm.
Where we would start in Leopold
If your board still has fuses, or only one safety switch, that's the job to do before anything else. Ask the electrician to check the backing panel at the same time, so any asbestos is planned for rather than discovered halfway through.
