Electricians in GeelongThe right sparky depends on when your street was built.

In Geelong, the job you need usually depends on which decade your street went up. A timber cottage in Geelong West, a 1950s Commission house in Norlane and a new build in Armstrong Creek need very different things from an electrician. Tell us the job and we'll match you with one licence-checked local electrician who does that work regularly, if we have one near you.

Why your suburb matters more than the city

Geelong grew from the Corio Bay shore south into Newtown and Geelong West. Most houses in Geelong West are single-storey timber: cottages, Edwardian and Federation homes, Californian bungalows. A house that old can still have original wiring in places, and none of it was planned for heat pumps, induction cooktops and a car on charge overnight.

From the 1950s, government housing went up in East Geelong, Norlane, North Shore and Corio. Norlane alone had 2,464 Housing Commission houses by 1976. Victoria's Asbestos Hub says a home built or renovated before 1990 likely contains asbestos, and WorkSafe Victoria lists switchboards and their backing boards as a typical place to find it.

Then there's the south. Armstrong Creek is a growth area of about 2,500 hectares planned for 55,000 to 65,000 people, and Powercor named Geelong and the Bellarine as a high-growth area back in its 2020 plan. Homes there start with modern boards, so the work is mostly additions.

Old fuses on a dark backing board? Don't drill or screw into it

In a pre-1990 Geelong home, treat a black or dark brown board behind the fuses as possible asbestos. Leave it closed and mention it when you book. Removing asbestos is work for a licensed asbestos removalist, and WorkSafe Victoria's code says a panel that comes out has to be replaced with a non-asbestos one, never reused.

The jobs Geelong homeowners ask about most

Switchboard upgrades in the older northern and inner suburbs, usually because a renovation or a new appliance needs circuits the old board can't give. Switchboard upgrades covers the signs.

Rental safety checks. At the 2021 Census, 28.0% of homes in the City of Greater Geelong were rented. Since 13 October 2026, every Victorian rental needs an electrical safety check every 2 years, so plenty of local landlords are booking their first. Rental safety checks explains what's tested.

EV chargers and solar in the southern estates. Powercor says new solar systems on its network since October 2024 need a Clean Energy Council approved inverter that supports CSIP-AUS, or they have to be set to zero export. Ask about that before you sign for panels.

Geelong's network, wind and floods

Powercor: 13 24 12

Powercor owns the poles, wires and your meter across Greater Geelong. Call it for outages and fallen lines, not an electrician. Energy Safe Victoria says to keep more than 8 to 10 metres from a fallen line and report it to Powercor and the police.

The wind hits here first

In the storms that began on 28 October 2021, the Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast municipalities were the most impacted in the state, and over 526,000 Victorian households lost power. After the February 2025 lightning storms, Powercor still had 2,411 Geelong customers off supply the next morning.

The Barwon River

The Barwon burst its banks in 1952, flooding Belmont Common, and overflowed again in 1995. Anything electrical that's been under water stays off until a licensed electrician has checked it.

Trees and the line into your house

If Powercor finds a defect on your side of the connection, like a loose service hook or trees on your land too close to the overhead service line, you'll get a defect notice and have to arrange the repair yourself.

Hiring an electrician in Geelong

In Victoria you engage a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC), which sends a licensed electrician to do the work. Energy Safe Victoria's registers are free to search, so check both before anyone starts. When the work's done, you're owed a Certificate of Electrical Safety. Checking a licence walks you through it.

We don't employ electricians. We pass your job to one licence-checked local electrician who does that kind of work.

Where we'd start in Geelong

Work out which era your house is from first. If it's a pre-1990 home still on its original fuse board, we'd have that board looked at before adding air conditioning, an induction cooktop or an EV charger. If it's a new southern-estate build, we'd ask the electrician to check spare switchboard space before buying a charger. Either way, save 13 24 12 in your phone before the next big blow.

Questions

Straight answers.

Who do I call when the power goes out in Geelong?

If the neighbours are dark too, it's Powercor: call 13 24 12 or check its outage map. If it's only your place, look at the switchboard for a tripped safety switch first. Fire, smoke or someone hurt is 000.

My Geelong rental hasn't had an electrical check. Does it need one now?

Yes. From 13 October 2026 the 2-yearly check applies to every Victorian rental, not just newer leases. If none has been done in the last 2 years when a renter moves in, the rental provider must arrange one as soon as possible.

Does an old Geelong West weatherboard need rewiring?

Not automatically. Age alone doesn't decide it. An electrician can test the existing circuits and tell you which are fine and which aren't. Old wiring explains the warning signs.

Do you have electricians in Armstrong Creek?

We're a referral service, so no electrician works for us. We match your job with one licence-checked local electrician who does it regularly, if we have one covering your area.
