For work inside the property, we match you with one licence-checked electrician around Gympie who does that kind of job, where we have one.

What's different about Gympie

The Mary River floods often

The river has flooded Gympie many times, including 1893, 1955, 1974, 1999, 2011, 2013 and 2022, and most floods come between December and April. In February 2022 it peaked at 22.96 m, the highest since 1893.

Floods hit the wiring, not just the house

The 2022 flood damaged a significant part of the network and customers' own electrical installations, with about 6,900 customer outages at the peak. An early count found 291 homes and 143 commercial and industrial properties across the region with flood damage.

Two networks meet here

Energex says customers north of Gympie are on Ergon Energy's network, so homes out of town may be on either. Energex: outages 13 62 62, fallen lines and shocks 13 19 62. Ergon: outages 13 22 96, fallen lines and shocks 13 16 70.

An old gold town

Gold was found here in 1867, and Mary Street still has 19th-century buildings. Council's Heritage and Neighbourhood Character Overlay brings extra requirements for building work on listed places.

Mostly houses

At the 2021 Census, 91.2% of occupied homes in the Gympie council area were separate houses and 22.0% were rented.

Hail and heat

The 31 October 2020 storms dropped hail up to 7 cm across around Gympie, and the town's hottest day on record reached 42.4°C.

The jobs that come up in Gympie

Flood recovery. After water's been through a home, the wiring, power points, switchboard and appliances all need a licensed electrician's check before the power goes back on. Storm, flood and surge damage covers the repair side.

Building or raising in flood areas. Since 1 January 2024, new homes in Gympie's flood hazard areas need a finished floor level 300 mm above the defined flood level. If you're building, ask the electrician how the switchboard and power points will sit relative to that level.

Smoke alarms. Every Queensland home needs interconnected photoelectric alarms by 1 January 2027. If yours are hardwired, the new ones must be too, fitted by an electrician. Queensland's smoke alarm laws has the detail.

Safety switches in older houses. Without an approved safety switch protecting the power points, a Queensland electrician generally can't do installation work until one's fitted, so an older home's first job is often at the board. Safety switches explains what they do.

Before and after a flood

If water is rising toward the house, switch off at the main switch while it's still dry and safe to reach. Once water has been inside, keep the power off until a licensed electrician has checked everything it touched. Treat any fallen line as live, keep well clear and report it: Energex on 13 19 62 in town, Ergon on 13 16 70 to the north. Call 000 if life is at risk.

If we lived in Gympie

We'd find out which network our address is on before the next wet season and save that network's numbers. If the house has ever had water through it, we'd have an electrician look at the board and the circuits near the floor, even if everything seems to work. And we'd get the smoke alarms sorted well before 1 January 2027.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is Gympie on Energex or Ergon?

Gympie itself is on Energex. Energex says customers north of Gympie are on Ergon Energy's network, so if you're out of town and unsure, your electricity retailer can tell you which one you're on.

Can I turn the power back on once the river goes down?

Not until a licensed electrician has checked everything that was under water. The 2022 flood damaged customers' own installations as well as the network, so even when the street has supply again, your house may not be safe yet.

Will you find me an electrician in Gympie?
