Sunshine Coast, Queensland
Electricians on the Sunshine CoastFrom 1960s beach houses to brand new estates.
Sunshine Coast electrical work swings between two kinds of home: older coastal houses from the building booms of the 1950s to the 1970s, and new estates going up now, like Aura near Caloundra. Storms, east coast lows and the odd cyclone are why the power goes out here, and outages and fallen lines go to Energex. For work inside the property, we match you with one licence-checked local electrician who does that kind of job, where we have one.

What's different on the Sunshine Coast
Energex runs the network
The coast is on Energex's network. Outages go to 13 62 62, and fallen powerlines and shocks to 13 19 62, day or night.
Three kinds of rough weather
Council says storms usually come between November and March, east coast lows between January and June, and cyclones between December and April, though it rates the risk of a Category 4 or 5 here as very low. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald caused 32,000 power interruptions on the coast in January 2013.
Flooding in any month
Council says inland flooding of the creeks, rivers and low-lying plains is a regular occurrence in extremely heavy rain, whatever the season. On the beaches, East Coast Lows bring the biggest coastal hazards, including inundation.
Older coastal houses
Seaside shacks of fibro and recycled materials went up from 1914 to 1946, Caloundra boomed from the early 1950s, and the wider coast in the 1960s and 1970s. Homes from those years can still have their original switchboards, and backing boards made before 1987 can contain asbestos.
New estates
Aura, south of Caloundra, is planned for about 20,000 dwellings and around 50,000 people. A new home is the easiest place to plan for solar, a battery and an EV charger from the start.
Rentals and units
At the 2021 Census, 27.3% of occupied homes in the Sunshine Coast council area were rented and 12.8% were flats or apartments. Up in Noosa Shire, there's no high-rise at all.
The jobs that come up most here
Smoke alarms before 1 January 2027. Every Queensland home needs interconnected photoelectric alarms by then. With more than a quarter of the coast's homes rented, landlords have extra steps too, like testing and cleaning every alarm within 30 days before each tenancy. Queensland's smoke alarm laws has the full rules.
Storm and hail damage. After the 17 November 2019 hailstorm, with hail estimated at up to 7.7 cm, homes and businesses reported damage to roofs, awnings and solar panels. Anything electrical that got wet or damaged stays off until a licensed electrician has checked it. Emergency electricians on the Sunshine Coast covers who to call first.
Switchboards in older homes. Queensland law generally stops installation work where no approved safety switch protects the power points, so in an older beach house a new circuit can start with the board. Switchboard upgrades explains the job.
Solar and EV planning in new builds. Energex's basic connection caps household solar export at 5 kW per phase, which is worth knowing before you size a system. Switchboards for solar and EV chargers covers the board side.
Test and tag for builders and businesses. Construction gear has its own Queensland standard. Test and tag on the Sunshine Coast has the detail.
Storm damage or lines down
Assume any fallen powerline is live and keep people and pets well away from it. Ring Energex on 13 19 62, or 000 if someone is in danger. The SES handles roof and tree damage on 132 500. Leave anything that's been wet switched off until a licensed electrician has checked it.
What we'd do on the coast
We'd put Energex's two numbers in our phones before November, when the storms usually start. In an older house, we'd have the switchboard and smoke alarms looked at in one visit, well before the 2027 deadline. In a new build, we'd ask the electrician to plan the board for solar and a charger now, even if both come later.
