Mackay, Queensland
Electricians in MackayOlder homes on stumps, and the wiring that came with them.
Most of Mackay's traditional houses are single storey timber homes raised on stumps, many from the building boom after the 1918 cyclone, and their wiring has usually been added to more than once. Raising, renovating or cooling one of these homes is licensed electrical work from start to finish. We match the job with a licence-checked local electrician who works on older homes regularly, where we have one.

Why older Mackay homes deserve a closer look
About 70 per cent of Mackay's buildings were destroyed in the January 1918 cyclone. The rebuild, along with the sugar industry's growth, brought a building boom through the 1920s and 1930s. Mackay Regional Council's heritage guide maps three character precincts: Queen's Park, subdivided in the 1880s; Railway Station, in the 1920s; and West Mackay, in the 1930s and 1940s, mostly Californian bungalows.
The same guide makes two points any electrician would back. Raising a house means extending the electrical wiring, including lowering the switchboard. And owners of older homes should keep a logbook recording the dates the wiring has been checked.
It also notes that some original timber walls were later 'modernised' with asbestos cement sheeting, better known as fibro. That matters the moment someone wants to cut in a new power point or run a cable through a wall.
Fibro walls: don't cut, drill or sand them first
Old fibro can contain asbestos. Leave it alone and mention it when you book, so the electrician can plan around it. Under Queensland work health and safety rules, removing more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos at a workplace needs a Class B or Class A licence, and smaller jobs still need a competent person trained in asbestos work.
Mackay at a glance
Network: Ergon Energy
Mackay is on Ergon's regional network. Report fallen powerlines or a shock on 13 16 70, and an outage on 13 22 96.
Rain that arrives all at once
On 15 February 2008, more than 600 mm fell on Mackay in six hours, affecting around 2,000 homes. Water in power points and under raised floors is a job for an electrician before anything is switched back on.
When the whole region goes dark
Cyclone Ului in March 2010 left 60,000 homes without power between Mackay, Proserpine and Collinsville. That restoration work is Ergon's, not an electrician's.
Storm tide areas
The council publishes storm surge evacuation maps for low-lying places such as Midge Point, Seaforth, Ball Bay, Grasstree Beach, Sarina Beach and Armstrong Beach.
Solar on a cyclone coast
Mackay is in Wind Region C, where the QRA says rooftop panels, aerials and dishes should be fixed through the roof sheeting into the roof structure.
Jobs that come up in Mackay, and why
Raising or renovating. The wiring gets extended and the board usually moves down with the house. It's a good moment to ask whether a switchboard upgrade or partial rewiring makes sense while the walls are open.
Safety switches. If the power points have no approved safety switch, a Queensland electrician generally can't do installation work in the home unless the job includes fitting one. Plan for it in any renovation quote.
Cooling. Afternoon humidity at Mackay Aero averages 65% and reaches 72% in February, so fans and split systems earn their keep. Older circuits may need help to carry them.
Smoke alarms. By 1 January 2027 every Queensland home needs interconnected photoelectric alarms, owner-occupied homes included.
Storm repairs. Wet wiring, damaged aerials and surge-hit appliances after the wet season.
Where we'd start in Mackay
Start the wiring logbook the council suggests, even if the first entry is today's date and a note that nobody knows when it was last checked. Then, before you raise, renovate or add air conditioning, get an electrician who works on older raised homes to look at the board and the wiring under the house, and add what they find to the book.

Questions
Straight answers.
We're raising our house. What happens to the electrics?
The wiring has to be extended to suit the new height, and the switchboard is usually lowered. Book the electrician early, so they can coordinate with the builder and tell you about any safety switch or board work the job will trigger.
Our old board has fuses and no safety switch. Can an electrician still add a power point?
In Queensland, a licensed electrician generally can't do installation work in a home without an approved safety switch for the power points, unless the job includes installing one or an exception such as an emergency applies. Expect the quote to include it.
Who do I ring when the power's out in Mackay?
If the street is out, Ergon Energy on 13 22 96. For a fallen line or a shock, Ergon on 13 16 70, or 000 if someone's in danger. If it's only your place, check the switchboard first, then call an electrician.
Is the 2027 smoke alarm rule only for rentals?
No. By 1 January 2027 every existing Queensland home, townhouse and unit needs interconnected photoelectric alarms, including homes the owners live in. Hardwired alarms must be replaced with hardwired ones, fitted by an electrician.
