Wantirna at a glance
From orchards to brick veneer
Known as Bayswater West until 1913, Wantirna grew orchards after early 1900s subdivision, and 1970s brick veneer replaced them.
Owner-occupied family homes
90.3% of occupied homes were separate houses in 2021, 49.0% had four or more bedrooms, 38.8% were owned outright and 19.6% were rented.
Creek flooding
Wantirna sits on Dandenong Creek, and VICSES covers it in the Blind Creek catchment flood guide.
AusNet supply
AusNet's Bayswater zone substation is the main source of supply for Wantirna. Faults go to AusNet on 13 17 99.
A 1970s board meets a modern house
Boards from that era were built for a shorter list of appliances. Today's list is longer: split systems or ducted cooling, induction cooking, solar, maybe a battery and a car. Each one adds circuits and load.
A house built before 1990 may also have asbestos in the switchboard backing. That's a reason to have it assessed properly, not a reason to leave an unsafe board in place.
Ask before you say yes
- Will the new board have space for solar, a battery and a charger later?
- Does my supply need upgrading, or only the board?
- If the backing board contains asbestos, who removes it?
- Which parts need an independent inspection before switch-on?
Where we'd start
We'd book a switchboard assessment before talking to a solar salesperson or a car dealer. Get the board right once, sized for everything you're planning, and the rest of the jobs become simpler.
