Electricians in MilduraAfter the surge, before the next heatwave.

In September 2026, a vehicle hit a power pole near Merbein and sent a major surge into homes across the Mildura area. Some wiring and appliances were damaged, and Powercor wouldn't reconnect a damaged house until an electrician had repaired it and sent in a Certificate of Electrical Safety. Add some of Victoria's hottest summers and a lot of rentals, and that's most of the local work. If we have a licence-checked electrician nearby who does your kind of job, we'll pass it to them.

What the 2026 surge meant for homes

On 21 September 2026 the crash caused a high voltage injection, cutting supply to more than 5,000 Powercor customers in the Mildura area. Powercor said homes with damaged wiring needed an electrician to repair it and issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety to Powercor before supply could be reconnected.

Mildura Rural City Council pointed residents with damaged appliances to Energy Safe Victoria's public register to find a registered electrical contractor. That's the right instinct for any job: check the contractor is on the register before they start.

If a surge has damaged your place

  1. Leave damaged gear unplugged

Anything that smelled hot, popped or won't turn on stays unplugged.

  2. Look for signs in the wiring

Scorch marks at power points, a burning smell or a safety switch that won't reset point to damage beyond one appliance. Switch off at the main switch if it's safe to reach.

  3. Book a registered contractor

Search Energy Safe Victoria's register, then book the repair. Ask for the Certificate of Electrical Safety at the end.

  4. Keep a list

Note what was damaged and when it happened. Your insurer may want it.

Mildura's network, heat and storms

Powercor: 13 24 12

Mildura is on Powercor's network. Ring 13 24 12 for outages, fallen lines and anything affecting the whole street. In June 2026 Powercor flew LiDAR helicopters over the lines around Mildura, Swan Hill and Ouyen as part of its bushfire and vegetation program.

Heat

Mildura Airport's record is 48.6 C, and the city passes 40 C on a number of days each year. That's a lot of hours of air conditioning, often from several units in one house.

Supercells

The November 2016 supercell storm brought over 485 calls for help and left up to 8,000 homes without power. For a fallen line, Energy Safe Victoria's advice is to stay more than 8 to 10 metres back.

Air conditioning, big blocks and rentals

Mildura's homes are almost all detached houses on relatively large blocks, with growth to the south, south-west and lately the east. Big blocks mean sheds, pumps and outdoor power a long way from the switchboard, and long cable runs need sizing properly.

At the 2021 Census, 36.5% of homes in Mildura were rented. Every Victorian rental now needs an electrical safety check every 2 years, and since 25 November 2025 a rental has had to meet the minimum electrical standard, safety switches included, at the time it's advertised.

Our take for Mildura

After 2026, we'd ask an electrician whether surge protection makes sense for our switchboard. Before summer, we'd make sure each air conditioner has a circuit that can carry it. And if we rented a place out, we'd book the 2-yearly check now, because the rule no longer waits for a new lease.

Questions

Straight answers.

Powercor won't reconnect my house after the surge. What do I need?

After the September 2026 surge, Powercor said damaged homes needed an electrician to repair the wiring and issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety to Powercor first. Book a registered contractor and ask them to send it once the work is done.

Would surge protection have stopped the damage?

We can't promise that. A surge protector at the switchboard is designed to limit spikes, but how much it helps depends on the size of the event and the device. Surge protection covers the options.

Who do I call if the whole street loses power?

Powercor, on 13 24 12. If floodwater is involved, Mildura Rural City Council's advice is to keep the power off until a licensed electrician has inspected the system and confirmed it's safe.
