Water in the house, the shed or the meter box?

Don't switch anything back on that's been under water, and don't wade near a meter box or power point that's wet. Keep clear of fallen lines and ring SA Power Networks on 13 13 66, or 000 if anyone's in danger. For storm or flood help with the house itself, call the SES on 132 500.

What's different in Murray Bridge

The river has come up before

Murray Bridge was among the South Australian towns flooded in the 1956 River Murray flood. The 2022-23 flood was the largest since then and the third highest ever recorded in the state, with flow at the Victorian border peaking at 186 GL a day on 22 December 2022.

Thousands of homes affected

About 3,500 private residences were affected over the course of the 2022-23 flood. On the Lower Murray between Mannum and Wellington, only 2 levees were breached and the rest were overtopped.

Reconnection needs an electrician first

SA Power Networks' flood guidance, written with the river in mind, says an inundated home needs an electrician to test and repair the wiring and provide a certificate of compliance before the power goes back on. You then contact your retailer to arrange the reconnection.

Outages from dirty insulators

SA Power Networks lists the Murraylands among the regional areas hit by outages caused by insulator pollution, which flared again in summer 2025/26. It set up a taskforce in January 2026 and is upgrading thousands of insulators.

Poles past the boundary are yours

On river blocks and farms, poles and lines beyond the connection point belong to the property owner. SA Power Networks recommends having them checked every year before bushfire season, after major storms, or whenever damage is suspected.

The jobs that come up here

Post-flood testing and repair. Before a wet house is reconnected, the electrician tests each circuit, replaces what water has ruined, and issues the certificate SA Power Networks asks for. Storm and flood damage explains what's usually replaced.

Private poles and lines. Older poles, sagging lines and long runs out to sheds and pumps. Private power poles covers who's responsible.

Pumps, sheds and outdoor power. Outdoor circuits close to the water need safety switches and fittings suited to the weather, and they're the first thing to check after high water.

After high water: what to have ready for the electrician

  • A note of which rooms, sheds and outdoor areas got wet, and how high the water reached.
  • Photos of the meter box and switchboard, taken without opening anything.
  • A list of appliances and pumps that were in the water. Leave them unplugged.
  • Your retailer's details, because they arrange the reconnection once the certificate is issued.
  • The electrician's CBS licence number, so you can check it on the register.

If we lived by the river

We'd know exactly which circuits run to the low parts of the property, and have the pump and shed circuits on their own safety switches. If a flood warning comes, we'd switch off at the main switch while it's still dry to reach. Afterwards, we'd book a licensed electrician to test everything before asking SA Power Networks to reconnect, and keep the certificate.

Questions

Straight answers.

Our house took water. When can the power go back on?

Once a licensed electrician has tested and repaired the wiring and provided a certificate of compliance. Then you contact your retailer, who arranges the reconnection with SA Power Networks.

Who looks after the power pole near our shack?

If it's past the connection point on your property, it's yours. SA Power Networks recommends a licensed inspector or authorised electrician checks private poles and lines every year before bushfire season and after big storms.

What paperwork should I get from a Murray Bridge electrician?

An electronic certificate of compliance (eCoC) within 30 days of the work. It confirms the electrician is licensed and that the work was tested and meets the Australian Standards.
