Tamworth, New South Wales
Electricians in TamworthHot summers, hard frosts, and hail in between.
Tamworth asks a lot of a house's wiring: around 20 to 25 days a year over 35 degrees, frequent hard frosts in winter, and hailstorms that have sent water through ceilings. Most of the electrical jobs here trace back to one of those three. Tell us yours and your postcode, and we'll match you with one licence-checked local electrician who does that kind of work, if we have one close by.

Water coming through the ceiling after a storm?
Keep clear of wet fittings
Stay away from any light, fan or switch near the leak. Water and a live fitting is how people get shocks.
Power off, if it's safe
Switch off at the main switch only if you can reach the switchboard without standing in water. If someone's been hurt, or there's smoke or sparks, call 000.
Storm damage to the roof
The SES takes storm damage calls on 132 500. Lines down in the street are Essential Energy's job, on 13 20 80.
Get it tested
Leave those circuits off until a licensed electrician has checked and tested them. A ceiling that's sagging with water is also a reason to keep the room empty.
Why hail is an electrical problem here
In late October 2020, a storm with golf ball hail hit Tamworth hardest. Hail blocked gutters and rainwater went into ceilings, and some collapsed or sagged. Ceilings are where the downlights, fans and their cables run. In December 2012, another hailstorm hit South Tamworth hardest, and one insurer alone had 916 home and contents claims within weeks.
After a storm like that, the roof gets fixed first. The wiring in the ceiling deserves the same attention, and our storm and flood damage page explains what a proper check covers.
Tamworth's local picture
Essential Energy territory
Essential Energy runs the network for regional NSW, and it's building a training academy for electrical apprentices and workers in Tamworth, set to fully launch in 2027. Report outages and fallen lines on 13 20 80.
Heat records
Tamworth Airport hit 45.9 degrees on 12 February 2017. Summer maximums average about 33.
Frost season
Winter nights average around 3 degrees, so heaters, heated towel rails and reverse-cycle systems all run hard through the cold months.
Declared disasters
Storm and flood declarations from October 2020 through March 2021, plus the Tamworth and Uralla bushfires from 27 December 2024 to 9 January 2025. In November 2008 heavy rain flooded Tamworth and Gunnedah.
The jobs that follow from all that
Heating and cooling circuits. With hot summers and cold winters, a reverse-cycle system earns its keep year round. Bigger units usually need their own circuit, and an older board may need upgrading to carry it.
Bathroom heat. Frosty mornings are why people ask about exhaust fans and heaters and heated towel rails. All of these are hardwired, so they're licensed work.
Ceiling repairs after hail. Once the roofer and the ceiling repairer are done, an electrician refits and tests the lights and fans that came down or got wet.
Rental properties. At the 2021 Census, 31.1% of occupied homes in the Tamworth Regional council area were rented. A NSW rental must have enough outlets for lighting, heating and appliances, and adequate lighting in each room except storage rooms and garages.
Our take for Tamworth
Before storm season, we'd clear the gutters and know where your main switch is, so you can turn it off from a dry spot if water comes in. If you're adding air con or bathroom heating, get the switchboard checked in the same visit. One electrician looking at the whole load beats two jobs a year apart.

Questions
Straight answers.
Who do I call if the power's out in Tamworth?
Essential Energy on 13 20 80 for outages and fallen lines. If it's just your home, try resetting the safety switch once, then call an electrician if it won't stay on.
Can I put the downlights back up myself after the ceiling's repaired?
No. Refitting downlights is electrical wiring work, and in NSW that has to be done by a licensed electrician. Ask for the CCEW when they're done.
Do I need a new circuit for a reverse-cycle air conditioner?
Larger units usually do. The electrician will check the board has room and safety switch protection for it, and tell you if the supply needs looking at.
