Hallett Cove, briefly
Built after a conservation fight
Housing on the land beside the cove was announced in 1965, and conservationists fought developments for 11 years. Surrounding land was subdivided from 1970, and the conservation park was declared in 1976.
Still growing in the 1980s
Hallett Cove School was established in 1987, a sign the suburb was still filling with families by then.
Houses with room
At the 2021 Census, 94.7% of occupied homes were separate houses, averaging 3.4 bedrooms. 45.4% were mortgaged, 39.2% owned outright and only 14.2% rented.
On the coast
Hallett Cove sits on Gulf St Vincent, 21 km south of the city, with clifftop streets and the Field River reaching the sea at its southern end.
An original Hallett Cove board versus what you're adding
| A typical 1970s or 1980s board | What solar, batteries and chargers need | |
|---|---|---|
| Safety switches | Often one, sometimes none | Every circuit protected |
| Spare room | Little or none | Space for new breakers and protection |
| Solar export | Not designed for it | Compatibility with Flexible Exports for solar installed since 1 July 2023 |
| Car charging | No dedicated circuit | A dedicated circuit sized for the charger |
How Hallett Cove upgrades usually go
Most start with a plan: solar now, a battery later, maybe a car in a few years. An electrician looks at the board and the supply, and often recommends replacing the board first so everything that follows has room and protection. Switchboards for solar and EV chargers explains what gets checked.
If the home's internet drops, SA Power Networks' Flexible Exports scales solar exports back to 1.5 kW until the connection returns, so a reliable Wi-Fi link to the inverter matters. For chargers, SA Power Networks stopped requiring approval for non-V2G home chargers on 11 September 2026; you still get an eCoC for the work.
Sea-view decks and gardens also bring requests for outdoor lighting and power, which should be weatherproof and on a safety switch.
Where we'd start in Hallett Cove
We'd write down everything we want over the next five years (solar, battery, charger, air conditioning, outdoor power) and give the whole list to the electrician quoting the first job. Designing the board once, for all of it, beats upgrading it twice.
