Wyong's housing, decade by decade
Wyong's older buildings include the public school (1889), St Cecilia's Church (1908), the Strathavon resort (1912 to 1913), turreted buildings on Church Street (1915) and the Court House (1924).
At the 2021 Census, 72.4% of homes in the suburb were separate houses, 16.1% were townhouses or semis and 11.0% were units. A home that has stood for decades has usually been through a few electricians, and the older the board, the less likely it has safety switches on every circuit.

Signs the wiring in an older Wyong home needs a look
- Fuses you pull out and rewire, instead of switches that flip.
- Lights that dim when the kettle or a heater goes on.
- Power points that are warm, scorched or loose.
- A safety switch that trips for no obvious reason, or no safety switch at all.
- A tingle from a tap, an appliance or the shower. Treat that one as urgent.
What we would do in Wyong
If you let the place out, get the switchboard and smoke alarms checked before the next tenancy starts, and keep the CCEW on file. If you live in it, start with the board: in an older house, that's where most of the warning signs above trace back to.
