Electricians in GoulburnOld houses, older wiring, and real cold.
Goulburn's houses span two centuries, from Georgian and Victorian buildings to post-war homes built of brick veneer and asbestos fibro. That range is why so much local electrical work is about old wiring, what's inside the walls, and keeping a cold house warm safely. Give us the details and we'll pair the job with one licence-checked electrician near you who works on homes like yours, if we have one.

Fibro walls or a dark switchboard? Don't drill
Goulburn Mulwaree Council says asbestos fibro was one of the two most common building materials in post-war houses here. Don't drill, cut or sand fibro sheeting or a dark switchboard backing board yourself. Tell the electrician before they quote, and ask how they'll manage the risk. Any amount of friable asbestos must be removed by a Class A licensed removalist in NSW.
Goulburn's housing, era by era
Five building eras
The council's heritage colour guide names Georgian (c.1820 to c.1840), Victorian (c.1840 to c.1900), Federation (c.1900 to c.1915), Interwar (c.1915 to c.1940) and Post War (c.1945 to c.1970) as the local periods.
A heritage city centre
The centre was surveyed in 1833 and holds most of the town's older buildings, including the Post Office (1881) and Court House (1887). Several heritage conservation areas are protected under the local environmental plan.
Solar on heritage homes
Goulburn Mulwaree Council says solar panels on a heritage item can fall under a minor works exemption if they're placed sensitively, for example out of sight of public places. It also offers a free heritage advisor.
Cold at 640 metres
Goulburn Airport has recorded minus 10.9 degrees, set in August, and a top of 42.8 in January.
Network and fault line
Goulburn Mulwaree Council's disaster dashboard lists Essential Energy, 13 20 80, for power outages.
Old wiring in old houses
In a Victorian or Federation house, the wiring has usually been replaced at least once, but not always all of it. Rubber-insulated cable, ceramic fuses and a missing earth are the things an electrician looks for. Our old wiring page explains what's worth replacing and when.
In a post-war fibro or brick veneer home, the switchboard is the usual starting point. Boards made before 1987 can have asbestos backing, and some old Federal fuses may hold friable asbestos inside the fuse carrier. That's why the electrician you're matched with should do older homes regularly, not now and then.
Keeping warm without overloading
Cold winters mean heaters, heated towel rails and reverse-cycle systems, often in houses never wired for them. A heater running off an extension lead or double adaptor isn't a safe long-term setup. A dedicated circuit and enough power points fix it properly, and both are licensed work. If you're adding bathroom heating, see exhaust fans and heaters.
Where we'd begin in Goulburn
We'd find out what era the house is and say it on the first call: Victorian, Federation, interwar or post-war fibro. It tells the electrician what to expect behind the walls and in the board. If solar is on your list and the house is heritage listed, have a quick chat with the council's heritage advisor before anyone quotes.

Questions
Straight answers.
Can an electrician run new cables through fibro walls?
Often, but the fibro may contain asbestos, so they need to plan how to do it safely, or route cables another way. Mention the fibro when you ask for a quote.
Can I put solar panels on my heritage home in Goulburn?
Possibly. The council says panels on a heritage item can fall under a minor works exemption if they're placed sensitively, such as out of view from public places. Check with the council's free heritage advisor first.
Who do I call for a power outage in Goulburn?
Essential Energy, on 13 20 80, as listed on the council's disaster dashboard. A problem inside your own home is one for an electrician.
