Ivanhoe's houses
An interwar heart
The Ivanhoe Views Estate heritage overlay (HO118) covers houses from 1920 to 1940 in Californian Bungalow, English Domestic Revival, Spanish Mission, Moderne and Colonial Revival styles.
Flats and units too
At the 2021 Census, 52.8% of homes were separate houses, 22.2% townhouses or semi-detached and 24.6% flats. 32.6% were rented.
Housing Commission pocket
Ivanhoe West has Housing Commission dwellings, and A.V. Jennings followed its Beaumont estate with Beauview in 1941.
On the river
The Yarra forms Ivanhoe's southern boundary and Darebin Creek its western one. It's in Banyule.
Signs the wiring needs attention
- Ceramic fuses, or a board with no safety switches.
- Power points that are loose, warm or discoloured.
- Lights that dim when the heater or kettle switches on.
- Old two-pin outlets with no earth.
- A burning smell near a switch or fitting. Switch off at the main if it's safe to reach and call an electrician.
- An inspector's note about old rubber or fabric-insulated cable.
Heritage and flats
Inside work rarely concerns a heritage overlay, but changes to the outside can. If you're in the Ivanhoe Views estate, check with Banyule before adding anything visible from the street, such as an outdoor unit or meter box.
In a block of flats, your unit's wiring and board are separate from the common property switchboard. Ask the owners corporation before any work that touches shared areas.
Where we'd start in Ivanhoe
With an inspection that tells you how much original wiring is left. If there's a lot, plan a rewire before the kitchen or bathroom renovation, while the walls are open anyway.
