South Morang's homes and power
The terminal station came first
Victorian Places says the growth corridor was unmistakably imprinted on the landscape with the South Morang electricity terminal station. The City of Whittlesea built its civic offices near it in 1992, and estates spread north from there, including Stockland's 76 hectare Hawkstowe from 2005.
A station near its limit
The South Morang Terminal Station hit a record summer peak of 389 MVA in 2023-24. AusNet and Jemena expect its rating to be exceeded in 2028-29 in a hot summer, and customer numbers across its area have grown by about 7,100 a year since 2019.
Young estates, big houses
At the 2021 Census, 84.4% of occupied homes were separate houses, 52.4% had a mortgage, 20.6% were rented and 50.6% had four or more bedrooms.
Going all-electric in South Morang
Swapping a gas cooktop for induction, gas heating for reverse cycle, or adding a car charger all put more load on your board. In a home from the late 1990s or 2000s, the board may have the breakers but not the spare space or capacity for all three at once.
An electrician will add up what you plan to run, check the board and the main supply, and tell you whether you can do it all on what you've got. Our page on moving from gas to induction covers the cooktop side, and EV charger installation in Melbourne the car.
If your supply does need to change, for example to three phase, the application goes to your distributor. Your bill tells you whether that's AusNet or Jemena.
Before you go all-electric, have these ready
- A list of the appliances you plan to add, and roughly when
- A photo of your switchboard with the door open, taken from a safe distance
- Your distributor's name from the electricity bill
- Whether you have solar, and the inverter's make and model
How we'd plan it in South Morang
Do the sums once, not three times. We'd ask one electrician to plan the induction cooktop, heating and car charger together, so the board is upgraded once if it needs to be, rather than every time a gas appliance gives out.
