Yeppoon, Queensland

Electricians in YeppoonOn the Capricorn Coast, the wind gets the final say.

Yeppoon takes the weather harder than Rockhampton: the Queensland Reconstruction Authority estimates homes here felt Category 2 to 3 winds in Cyclone Marcia, against Category 1 to 2 in Rocky. So how rooftop solar and aerials are fixed, and what to do after a storm, are the electrical questions worth asking. Tell us the job and we'll match it with one licence-checked local electrician who does that work, where we have one.

What's different on the Capricorn Coast

Marcia set the benchmark

In February 2015, about 50,000 homes across the Capricorn Coast lost power and live lines came down in Yeppoon. Houses lost roofs, 234 properties were damaged in Yeppoon, and more than 800 people sheltered in the Yeppoon Cyclone Shelter.

Your network: Ergon Energy

Report an outage to Ergon on 13 22 96. Fallen powerlines and shocks go to 13 16 70, any hour, and 000 if anyone's in danger.

Flash floods, November to April

Livingstone Shire Council says the local flood season runs from November to April and flash flooding is the most common kind. It also notes bushfires can happen at any time of year.

Holiday houses with history

Rockhampton families began building seaside holiday houses on the hills above Emu Park in the 1870s. A beach house that's been extended over the years can have wiring added in just as many stages.

Rooftop solar in a cyclone wind region

Yeppoon is in Wind Region C. The QRA's advice is that rooftop solar panels, aerials and satellite dishes should be fixed through the roof sheeting into the roof structure, not just to the sheeting. When you get solar quotes, ask each installer how their frames are fixed and whether that suits your roof.

On the electrical side, Ergon's basic connection offer limits household inverters to 10 kVA per phase and exports to 5 kW per phase. If your place is on a single wire earth return line, common in rural areas, the basic export limit drops to 2 kW in total. Any new or replacement solar and battery system of 10 kVA or more in Queensland must have a generation signalling device, which lets Ergon switch it off briefly in an energy emergency.

After a storm: lines, water and what stays off

Treat any fallen line as live and keep everyone well away. If water came through the roof, a light fitting or into the walls, leave those circuits off and have a licensed electrician check them before they're used again. For storm damage to the house itself, call the SES on 132 500.

Jobs that come up here

Storm repairs. Damaged aerials, wet fittings and appliances hit by surges. Storm, flood and surge damage explains how they're assessed.

Solar and batteries. Getting the export settings, the board and the roof fixings right on day one.

Older beach houses. Boards without safety switches and wiring added in stages. In Queensland, an electrician generally can't do installation work in a home whose power points have no approved safety switch, unless the job includes fitting one.

Smoke alarms. Interconnected photoelectric alarms are required in every Queensland home by 1 January 2027.

If it were our place in Yeppoon

Before cyclone season, we'd check how the solar panels are fixed, and if nobody knows, ask an installer to look. We'd also press every safety switch test button and save Ergon's numbers. If the house is an older beach place, we'd get an electrician to look at the board before adding anything big like a battery or air conditioning.

Questions

Straight answers.

Does Yeppoon get worse winds than Rockhampton?

In Cyclone Marcia it did. The QRA estimates Yeppoon homes felt Category 2 to 3 winds, stronger than the Category 1 to 2 felt in Rockhampton. How exposed your own home is depends on the site.

Who do I call when the power goes out on the Capricorn Coast?

Ergon Energy: 13 22 96 for outages and 13 16 70 for fallen lines or shocks. If only your home is out, check your switchboard, then call an electrician.

Does the 2027 smoke alarm rule cover our beach house?

If it's a home in Queensland, yes: every existing home, townhouse and unit needs interconnected photoelectric alarms by 1 January 2027. For a home let under a tenancy, the rules have applied since 1 January 2022 whenever a tenancy starts or is renewed.
