Tullamarine's homes and network
Estates and light industry
Tullamarine is a collection of housing estates and light industry. The Village Drive-In closed in 1984 and became an estate with streets named after film studios.
A third rented
At the 2021 Census, 34.1% of homes were rented, 31.6% owned outright and 30.5% owned with a mortgage. 39.6% were townhouses or semi-detached.
Strong growth on Jemena's network
Jemena's 2025 planning report puts its Tullamarine zone substation among its strongest growth areas, above 5% a year in both summer and winter.
The airport next door
Melbourne Airport forms the suburb's western edge and opened in 1970. Jemena says it sits at the approximate geographical centre of its network.
What hot summers do to a house's wiring
On the hottest afternoons, several air conditioners, the fridges and the oven can all draw power at once. In an older house with only a few circuits, that's when breakers trip and plugs or power points run warm.
A dedicated circuit for each larger air conditioner, a board with room to spare and safety switches on every circuit fix most of it. If you're adding another split system, ask the installer whether it needs its own circuit.
For the one home in three that's rented, the landlord must also have the installation checked every 2 years and keep the record until the next check is done.
If the power trips on a hot afternoon
Find what tripped
At the switchboard, see which safety switch or breaker has dropped. Turn the air conditioners off before you reset it.
Reset once
If it holds, bring appliances back one at a time to find the one that trips it.
If it trips again
Leave it off and call an electrician. Repeated tripping means a fault or an overloaded circuit.
If the street is out
It's a network fault. Call Jemena on 131 626.
What we'd do in Tullamarine
Before next summer, we'd have an electrician confirm the air conditioners aren't sharing circuits with the kitchen and that every circuit has a safety switch. It's the most direct way to stop the afternoon trips.
