Bundoora by the numbers
Homes
At the 2021 Census, 76.1% of Bundoora's homes were separate houses, 14.8% townhouses or semi-detached and 9.1% flats or apartments.
Renters
27.6% were rented, 36.5% owned outright and 32.3% owned with a mortgage.
Three councils
Bundoora spans the City of Banyule, the City of Darebin and the City of Whittlesea, so planning questions depend on which side of the boundary you're on.
Newer pockets
After the Janefield Colony closed, most of its land was sold for housing, and the former repatriation and psychiatric hospital sites were also redeveloped with houses.
What that means for electrical work
In the older houses the questions are the familiar ones for the era. Is the switchboard still on fuses? Are the power and lighting circuits on safety switches? Has anyone tested the wiring in the last few decades? In the newer estates it's more often an extra circuit, a car charger or solar.
With more than a quarter of homes rented, landlords here need to keep on top of Victoria's 2-yearly electrical safety checks. Since 29 March 2023, rental power outlets and lighting circuits have needed switchboard-type circuit breakers and safety switches, and some older fuse boards can only meet that with a full replacement.
What we'd do in Bundoora
If you've bought or inherited one of the older houses, start with an inspection rather than a quote for a single job. That's the quickest way to learn if the house needs a few repairs or a new board and some rewiring.
