Midland in brief
Born in the 1890s
Midland was established in the 1890s, and Midland Junction spread out from the Town Hall (1906) and Post Office (1913) sites over more than 70 years. The Railway Workshops ran from 1904 to 1994 and joined the State Register of Heritage Places on 10 June 2008.
Townhouses first
50.6% of occupied homes were semi-detached, row or terrace houses or townhouses, 32.2% separate houses and 16.8% flats or apartments, across 3,868 private dwellings.
Heritage approvals
The City of Swan says places on its Heritage List need development approval for demolition, alterations or other development, while some maintenance and repair is allowed without it. Check with the City before changing the outside of a listed place.
Network work in the City of Swan
Western Power is trialling silicone treatment of insulators against pole top fires in the City of Swan, and the City is part of its Targeted Underground Power Program.
Felt a tingle from a tap or appliance?
Stop using it
Don't touch it again, and keep everyone else away from it.
Tell Western Power first
On Western Power's network every shock has to be reported, even a slight tingle. Call 13 13 51, or 000 if someone's hurt.
Then tell the landlord
If the fault is in the home's wiring or a fixed appliance, the landlord must engage a licensed electrical contractor to fix it.
What Midland landlords are expected to have
At least two RCDs protecting every power and lighting circuit. If a landlord ignores a written request, the tenant can send Building and Energy the request, the rental agreement and a photo of the switchboard, and an inspection and order can follow.
Smoke alarms that are mains-powered, working, in date and no more than 10 years old. Where there's more than one, they must be interconnected, unless the home's building permit application went in before 1 May 2015.
If we owned a Midland rental
We'd book one electrician for the RCDs and smoke alarms together between tenancies, keep the certificate on file, and give tenants Western Power's number for shocks. Sorting a missing safety switch on your own timetable beats an order from Building and Energy.
Want a specialist to sort it?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match the licence-checked local electrician who does this kind of work, and they call you. No ring-around, and your number goes to them alone.
