Applecross at a glance
Burke's quarter-acre blocks
From 1925, Thomas Burke bought about 900 hectares from Canning Bridge towards Point Walter, and over ten years sold it as 1,000-square-metre blocks in estates such as Applecross Estate and Kintail Road Estate.
Underground since the start
Applecross was one of the pilot projects of the State Underground Power Program, which began in 1996 after a severe 1994 storm disrupted power across Perth.
High-rises in the east
As of 2025, several towers were under construction in the eastern part of the suburb, taking the number of high-rises to about a dozen. At the 2021 Census, 16.6% of homes were flats or apartments.
Settled owners
44.1% of homes were owned outright and the median age was 44. 43.7% had four or more bedrooms.

In an apartment
Inside your own unit, the usual jobs are lighting, extra power points, an induction cooktop or a ceiling fan, all licensed work. Anything that touches common property, like risers, the car park or a shared switchroom, usually needs the strata company's approval first.
A car charger in a shared car park is the classic example. Ask the strata what supply is available and how charging will be metered before you get quotes. A grid-only charger is treated by Western Power as an ordinary load, while a bidirectional one counts as a generator under its solar rules.
In an established house
Big blocks and big houses draw a lot of power. Since 11 April 2023 Western Power's standard household supply has been 63 amps on single phase and 32 amps per phase on three phase, and if new circuits would push past that, the contractor must assess the demand and apply for more.
If the switchboard is older, adding capacity brings in Western Power's rule that the main switch must be a circuit breaker. That's often the moment to fit safety switches on every circuit too, which WA requires before a home's title transfers on sale.
If it were our place in Applecross
In an apartment, we'd talk to the strata manager before calling anyone, because the answer on common property decides the whole job. In a house, we'd list everything we might add over the next few years, from a heat pump to a car charger, and ask for one board and one supply plan that covers all of it.
