Units and the smoke alarm deadline
Every Queensland home, including units and owner-occupied houses, must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms by 1 January 2027. In a unit that usually means an alarm in each bedroom and in the hallway outside, all linked so they sound together.
If your current alarms are hardwired, the new ones must be hardwired too, and that's a job for an electrician. Wireless alarms with a non-removable 10-year battery are the one kind you can fit yourself. Anything on common property, such as stairwells or the main switchroom, goes through the body corporate.
Redcliffe, in four facts
High-rise along the water
The first high-rise went up on Marine Parade in 1974. Until 2000 there were only four buildings over six storeys on the whole peninsula, then high-rise and mixed-use blocks spread along the coast. At the 2021 Census, 37.6% of homes were flats or apartments.
Older seaside streets
Redcliffe has been a seaside resort since the 1880s, and the Hornibrook Bridge in 1935 brought rapid suburban growth. Houses from those decades sit alongside the newer towers.
First in line for bay storms
The October 2020 storms brought wind damage from Redcliffe to Kingston. When ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred came ashore on 8 March 2025, the Bureau recorded a 104 km/h gust at Redcliffe, its strongest that day.
Plenty of renters
42.3% of Redcliffe homes were rented in 2021, and 32.1% were owned outright. Energex supplies the peninsula: outages go to 13 62 62.
After a big blow
During Alfred, most outages came from trees and branches falling onto power lines. If a line is down near you, treat it as live, keep well back and call Energex on 13 19 62. If only your unit is dark while the building has power, that's a job for an electrician, and in a strata block it's worth telling the body corporate as well.
Our take for Redcliffe
Book the smoke alarms well before 1 January 2027, not in the final weeks before the deadline. If you own a unit, ask the body corporate what's yours and what's common property, then have the alarms and your own switchboard done in one visit.
