Indooroopilly's housing, in short
Old houses kept, not replaced
Many post-war homes and Queenslanders have been restored, and Brisbane City Council rules discourage demolishing Queenslanders. Brisbane's character overlay covers houses substantially built in 1946 or earlier.
A railway suburb
The railway arrived in 1875 and the Albert Bridge opened the next year, and houses grew up around the station. The 1893 flood took out that first bridge.
Nearly half apartments
At the 2021 Census, 45.4% of homes were flats or apartments and 46.7% separate houses. With the University of Queensland next door, the median age was just 33.
On the river
The Brisbane River forms the suburb's southern edge, 7.8 km south-west of the CBD. Energex supplies the area: outages on 13 62 62.
In an old Queenslander
A house that's been restored on the outside can still have decades-old wiring inside. If you're renovating, have an electrician check the cable runs under the floor and in the roof before the builder closes anything up, and look at rewiring old wiring to see what's usually replaced.
Queensland doesn't let a licensed electrician do new installation work in a home with no approved safety switch on the power points, unless the job includes fitting one. So in an unrenovated old house, expect that to be part of the quote.
In a unit or share house
With so many renters and students, the landlord rules matter here. A rental without an approved safety switch on the power points needs one within 90 days of the tenancy starting, and every new or renewed lease needs interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. In an apartment block, anything in the shared areas or the main switchroom goes through the body corporate.
If we owned in Indooroopilly
In a Queenslander, we'd pay for an electrician's look at the wiring before signing off on a renovation plan. In a rental unit, we'd book the smoke alarms and safety switch check between tenants and keep the certificate with the lease papers.
